Vaccinations

Does anybody give their puppy the vaccinations @ home? And if so, What kind do you use? I see a lot of different information about what even the VET's recommend and was curious?

We do all our own vaccinations with the exception of rabies.

I use the ProGuard DPv vaccine. We only vaccinate for Distemper and Parvo, nothing else.

Our puppies get their vaccinations at 8 weeks, 13 weeks, 18 weeks. Then a booster one year later and thereafter, every 3 years.

What region do you live in? I live in the southern part of Alabama and I am wondering if this would make a difference?

I live in North Idaho which will make a huge difference in flea and tick care (we are lucky, we don't have either )

As far as vaccinations go, I don't know if you need anything different in your area. Maybe some of the other forum members can help you out in that area. If you ask your vet, they will probably want to give the pup everything under the sun.

What about it, fellow list-mates? Does his area of the country need Lepto, or any of the other vaccinations?

Thanks for the reply Sharon. I really appreciate it. Does anyone else who lives in the hot southern area have any suggestions or know where I could link and find this info. My vet is the giving the: Distemper, Adenovirus Type 2, Hepatitis, Parainfluenza, Parvovirus, Leptospira can., Leptospira ict., and Coronoavirus. This seems a bit excessive but I wanted to check?

I think there are things that "tropical" dogs are more prone to, but I can't remember specifically what. One of my puppies is down in Arkansas (very souther part), and his owner was telling me the higher risk of a few things. Unfortunately, she died of ovarian cancer and I can't seem to get in touch with the husband any more. So I really can't tell you more than that.

I just had my two in for their rabie shots and no other shots. My vet told me that they stopped giving the lepto shot for a few years now because of no need for it. I'm in Florida. I didn't get all the other regular shots as I feel my dogs don't need them. They have had all their shots every year up until this year. Enough is enough as they are 6 and 9 years old. I'll get them titered next year. You may check with your vet in regards to Lyme disease if you have a large tick problem in your area. Definately keep them on HW meds, for mosqitoses are horrific this year.
