I feel for you, I've been right there.
My sister had a minature schnauzer that lived to a nice old age of 15. At year 9, he had an episode similar to what you have described. He stopped using his hind legs, they were just like rubber, but he was in good spirits. He was diagnosed with an enlarged liver (Cushings disease?) and treated.
Years later, he had another episode, and could not use any of his legs, they were all rubber. He could not even relieve himself. My sister had moved away years before, and I pretty much looked after the "little rat".
I took him to the vet, and discussed his short and long term prognosis. We decided that further increases in his drugs would not help him long term, we could go to extraordinary lengths, and prolong his life a few months. He had a full and rich life, and I didn't want to cause him any unnecessary pain and suffering for selfishly still wanting him around. We spent a little more time together, I told him what a great dog he was he was PTS in my arms.
That's one of the hardest things I have ever done in my life. I still miss that little rat dog. Hope he's having a ball at the bridge.
I don't know if any of this helps, but I'm really feeling for you.
