Skin scrape

I just scheduled a skin scrap for my puppy and would like to know anyone's experience when going to the vet to have this done. Anything I should ask or have done in addition to the skin scrap? We are getting it done due to his constant scratching. The vet reccomended this to find out if he has any mites he might be allergic to. If that doesnt work the they reccomended to go to UC Davis to a Dermatologyst. Has anyone had this procedure done for their babys at UC Davis? Also it sounds expensive...what should I expect to pay?

Thanks

The skin scrape shouldn't hurt in the least. Pendant on what/ type of mange (mite) they find will treat them differently. I can't tell you how much the scrapes cost, but it is a quick procedure, and after the sample is collected, it can be looked at under the microscope. So, unless you have to go to UC Davis, I wouldn't expect alot of $$ to be spent.

How old is the pup?? Have you tried an oatmeal based shampoo?? Feeding a good quality food?? Is there a reason the vet suspects an allergy to mites?

Rottmom,

He is 6mo old and i we did change his food to a duck and potato food from natures balance and special shampoo from the vet. Its not oatmeal but it is suppose to help. We also have used a spray used to moisturize his skin. But nothing helped so far.
