Could be allergies?

Yesterday my 7-year old seemed a bit sluggish around mid-afternoon and her eyes were red and itchy. While fine in the morning, it just seemed to come upon her. It was very windy, so maybe some dirt got into her eyes when she went out to go to the bathroom. This morning she was the same, do you think it could be allergies? Has anyone ever given their rott an antihistamine?

Thanks in advance,
LeeAnn

Your dog needs to see the vet. There are a number of conditions which can present with red, itchy eyes, and allergies are only one. It could be a condition such as an infection or scratched cornea which should have immeditate medication. The vet can determine what is causing these symptoms.

I would suggest also that you go out with the dog and see if she is pushing her face into some pollen laden bushes or something, and then that you flush the eyes with a saline solution when she comes back inside.

You should go to the vet and have them evaluate the dog's eyes. It could easily be allergies or it could be something else. You can give a dog benedryl (this time of year, in Florida, both Nina and my husband live on the same box ) but you need to ask your vet for the correct dosage or you will get one droopy dog.
