Certainly not common. Sounds like it might be cataracs (boy does that prove I can't spell) but ask your vet to take a look in case it is something that medication might help.

There is a condition (I think) in older dogs where their eyes get cloudy, looks like cataracts, but isn't......not sure what it is called.

Are they just cloudy or could they have gotten irritated as well? When Mocha recently got dust in her eyes they were puffy and cloudy.

My eight year old rottweiler has had this bluish cloudy tinge to his eyes for a while- more then a year. Earlier this year I took him to a canine eye doctor for a complete checkup (he is neutered and never bred, but think it is important to have a through checkup in old age that CERF exams might miss). I did ask about the cloudy-bluish tinge and she told me that it was nothing to worry about. It was a sign of old age and has no connection to cataracts.
As always, if you are concerned, make an appointment with your vet. For my dog with the specalist the complete exam cost me about $80. Well worth my piece of mind.

Nina's eyes have gotten cloudy with age. The vet said it was not cataracts and nothing to worry about. It doesn't seem to affect her vision, as our house is a constant obstacle course!

Went to the vet treated with antibiotics for a week no improvement Seems to be an infection being treated now with steroids to help inlamation If no improvement it's off to the specialist Thanks for the responces.

So the vet didn't think it might just be old age?
I hate seeing dogs getting pumped full of stuff un-necessarily....

And as far as eye drops you should avoid those with preservatives. Go with an artificial tear that is preservative free, for dry or irritated eyes. Unless it is something your vet gives you.

I had a GSD with cloudy eyes. I think he was 7 or 8 when the problem started. My vet referred us to an animal opthalmologist (the same guy who does the eye certs around here). It was a degenerative eye disease, but it could be managed with the proper meds. We caught it early and he retained most of his sight until we put him to sleep following a stroke at age 12.

My Cocker Spaniel has, er actually, make that HAD, the clouding of the eyes. It was not cataracts, as per our vet. He said it was virtually a harmless condition. But it would be like looking into a smokey room. He had no suggestions.

My friend, well versed in herbology, recommended parsley daily with meals. It can be fresh or dried, about a teaspoon or so, sprinkled on dinner. I saw no harm in feeding my dog parsley. I'd read somewhere it improved the dogs breath.

Well lo and behold not only was his breath fresher, but the clouding is completely gone! It's been nearly a year since I started feeding parsley. My Cocker is 12 and it's wonderful to see his bight little eyes shining once more. I can't wait until his next visit so I can tell my vet! I now add parsley to all of my dogs foods.

When the vet gave you antibiotics, what did they say they were treating? Same with the steroids - what are they treating??

I always question meds given off the cuff - I won't allow my dogs to get any meds unless I get an explanation of what they are for and any and all side effects...
