I switched vets recently. My girl had a UTI, that the doctor said would go away, which it never did. She gave her medicine and still the UTI would keep coming back. After about the 5th visit, the doctor, who looked annoyed that I was there again, walked up fast to me, grabbed my rottie by the collar, and pulled her to take her back. My rottie Dallas loves everyone, but didn't like the doctor who "ripped" her away from me. She growled and niped into the air. What does the doctor say? "You better control this dog or else your going to have a goddamn lawsuit on your hands". Funny how the lady that was sitting next to me replied to the doctor, "I've been petting her since they got here, she is fine". The doctor replied, "Are you a doctor now?" Needless to say that was my last visit. I now have a doctor who shows love for every animal that walks in the door. My Rottie loves the pet doctor now....weird.....
If anything makes you suspicious, I would find another vet who you are 100% comfortable with....I did, amen!

I have to say ... the vet is consistently overbooked and you wait a long time..very annoying and inconsistent...however, I really do love and respect my own vet...my mistake that I had to deal with someone else...however, he is semi-retired and once he is gone so will I....unless he doesn;t have a good answer for me today about what happened last night, then I will go now. (my own vet helped me through a very bad illness in my first rottie and then made the house call to let her go...for that I will always love him)

Hi guys, update...my vet called me...took him a little over an hour (with his schedule I am impressed) I gave him the shortened version and he said that since he sold his practice (I had forgotten this) he has been unhappy about a few things as well....He said that he never takes a dog away from their owner and prefers the owner does the restraining when/if necessary...he also does not let the tech do the procedure but said that most other vets do..not that they can;t but that is just the way he does it and this is what I have been used to in my dealings with him...he said to be "an ???????" tell them no you are not taking my dog and I will wait for the vet...ANYWAY he said if the test was for culture and sensitivity and they took it off the floor he would petition to have them fired...they took it off the floor because they are looking to see if the infection (white blood cells) is still present, and they wanted it straight from the bladder to rule out vaginitis .... he apologized and I told him I will never see anyone else in there again and when he leaves so will I....bottom line is if there is still and infection we will do more antibiotics and if there is no infection present he thinks it is an incontinence problem that could easily correct itself as she sexually matures and goes through her first heat. Not sure I feel any better tho...if he is "semi-retired" how often will I get him when I need him..unfortunately I may have to find someone else.....waiting for the results now...

If "your" vet has sold the practice, I'd start asking around for other vets in your area. I have a feeling you're going to have to move vets soon. I'd look for a vet who's just starting out and has the time to give her personal attention.

Odd coincidence: I've owned dogs for almost a year & a half & I've never taken them to the vet - Darling Husband who works nights does that. :-)

Results from what?? The pee taken from the floor?? Don't bother...you won't get a clean result. Who knows what crap was on the floor besides your dogs pee!!

Does not matter what they are looking for in the sample. I work in a urine cytology lab (testing for cancers of the urinary system) and told this story to co-workers. They were APPALLED to say the least...they agreed that there is no way in hades that a proper result can come of this specimen. I would have your vet do the needle aspiraion of the urine and re-do the test AT NO COST TO YOU...

I live in CT - I know a few folks up in your neck of the woods - I'll see if I can find a referral for you. What vet do you go to now??

WHAT a mess!! I just read this thread for the first time and got so angry!! Ugh! I first of all am glad that your informed you vet..but really, I personally would have to think about filing a formal complaint against the clinic..you know make a paper trail...because if this happened to your dog..then it is happening to other dogs. I agree with everyone else...first of all a new sample should be taken WITHOUT QUESTION. Do you know what is on the ground, let alone a vet's office, where other dogs come in there (some clean and some dirty) who get scared and urinate/poop on the floor and who come in with nasty oozing wounds...and that crap is going to be in your urine sample that was obtained from the floor. I work at a hospital and I don't even like patients or their family members placing their belongings on the floor because of what is on it (INFECTION). That is like you peeing on the floor and the doctor using that as your specimen... That is SOOO very messed up and for the fact that he didn't want to redo the test, just upsets me further...you could get a false-positive and your dog will have to go back on antibiotics for no reason. Don't get me wrong, I am glad your vet was sympathetic and all, but the test needs to be redone and you should NOT be charged for it! And since he has sold his practice and is semi-retiring...do yourself a favor and switch vets!!! You know, if I was you, I don't know if I could even walk back into that place to let that vet redo it...I think I would see someone else.. Good luck to you..

I have to say that after the dust has settled I have to agree with you....no matter what they should not have sent that sample out...they should have offered to do another needle or let me bring them a clean sample...ugghh...my vet I trust and he was so good to me with the illness of my first girl...but I think it is time to move on expecially if he is going to be working parttime...the vet is VCA Animal Hospital formerly Valley Vet. I just called tell them that I will be dropping of fresh sample this afternoon that I want tested at no cost and I will be picking up the interseptor I did pay for and did not receive as well as being reimbursed $43 for the first sample from the floor....that was met with a curt "you will have to speak to the doctor about that" and was immediately put into her voicemail....getting angry again...

Don't bother. I'd find another vet right now. Maybe somebody out there can give you recommendations for another vet???

We've had good luck with the VCA hospital near us - "our" vet LOVES Rotties, which is a lucky break for us.

At this point, I'd call them back and tell them that if you don't get what you want, you're calling the BBB. And then call the BBB anyway.

Mad for you!!!

hi huys, I wanted to give you an update...i dropped off new sample and was given my interceptor and my refund with no hassle...my doc called yesterday to say she had a few white blood cells in her urine..nothing like what it was but still a few...he prescribed her ceflexin 500mg 3 times a day for 2 weeks along with 1000 m of vitamin c...he says he will call me in 10 days to se if she has had any more leaking and if so he will give her ..PPA? a med for incontinence...we will see...But here is the better part...he said bring her in with you when picking up meds so I can visit with her..so I did...she was AFRAID as soon as we entered the building...he came into the waiting room with a fistful of treats and she happily followed him into the exam room where he pet her fed her more cookies and looked at her teeth and paws and felt her all over - gave her more treats and off we went we went...a good visit to the vet... I have a feeling though that unless i do this once a month the bad memory is burned in...I asked him when he was retiring and he is not sure, I told him my concerns and he listened but I still feel that I will have to find a new vet sooner than later...thanks for listening and the advice has been great - hopefully she will stop leaking with this antiboitic and we will never need the incontence meds. Thank you all

It sounds like your normal vet is a good guy . . . all good vets should not be allowed to retire!! The incontinence med you are talking about is Proin . . . it's pretty commonly used and pretty effective. Good luck with everything!!

Okay - yes, it is sometimes required for a needle to be used to get a direct urine sample. No, it is not acceptable that they did this procedure without your knowing that it was occurring. That was NOT why your dog was whisked away. And certainly NOT by a tech when you had specified that you wanted the vet to do the procedure.

Sometimes, some dogs behave better when their owners are not present. Simply, they don't know how far they can push these people they don't know, so they just sit still. This option should NEVER be exercised without consulting with the owner, attempting treatment with the owner present first.

I agree with finding a new vet. You MUST feel comfortable with your veterinarian as they are your partners in your pet's health. It cannot be one sided, it cannot be effective without full cooperation.

I would talk to people in your breed club, obedience clubs, at trials and whatnot. The right vet is out there for both you and your dog. People with great vets are very happy to give them referrals.

I managed vet clinics for years. I made a change in my career, but I'm still very critical about vets and how a practice is managed. I went through 4 clinics before I got to the one I'm at now. I like them, they like my dog, I'm comfortable asking them questions and I feel like we're working together. Everyone should feel as comfortable.
