Question about Metronidazole

Should I be aware of anything negative with my boy taking this medicine? My vet put him on it for a couple of weeks to see if we can cure some uncommon diarrhea which I've posted about in the nutrition section.

I'll be giving him half a tablet twice a day to start to see if that helps. I've done some online research and didn't see anything too bad about it, but wanted to check with everybody here to see if I could get some first hand experience.

Thanks!

Ilsa has been on 250 mg of metronidazole daily for the last couple months during her chemotherapy. The oncologist said that long term usage at a low dose was safe, but a high dosage over a long period could make the dog a little loopy.

My rottie took 5 pills (250 mg each) every morning for 3 years. No ill effects. She had Immune Mediated Issues and Inflammitory bowel disease. Taking these pills made her short life comfortable.

The drug is also called Flagyl. It's used for intestinal distress, and according to my vet, it's also used for urinary problems, and occasionally skin problems (didn't know that until last week).

My vet actually keeps me stocked up with this particular drug, as well as letting me keep keflex on hand, so that after a phone consultation, I can save a 60 mile round trip for things that I can deal with at home.

It's safe if used as directed.
