Talking Worms????

Well I was supposed to head to NYC with Ryan today...but Julius was vomiting this morning & I didn't want to leave him. Especially because he would have been alone for quite awhile.

Anyway, we just got back from a walk & Julius pooped & there were these white stringy things in his poop that almost looked like bean sprouts. Unfortunatly Ryan has the digital camera or I would take a picture of the white things for you all to see. I know...lucky you. I did a search on Google for pictures of worms & they really do look like the roundworm pictures that I've found.

Julius is on Interceptor but I did read that they can lay dormant for awhile. Maybe he contracted them before the Interceptor started?!? He had his first dose about a month ago.

He was vomiting this morning but now that seems to have gone away. I withheld breakfast because I didn't want to upset his stomach more.

I will take in a stool sample to the vet tomorrow to have it checked. Julius has never had worms before...so I'm a bit clueless on this whole thing. They weren't wriggling around in his poop though. It was just a small mass of white & they were a bit transparent.

Could worms cause vomiting?!? Ryan did take Julius for a hike yesterday & said that he was eating quite a bit of grass. Maybe he injested something else that looks like worms????

If it does turn out that he has roundworms what is the treatment? Do we have to treat our yard as well?

Thanks guys!

Brooke

I'm wondering if they could be tapeworms. My one cat used to get them when she was an outdoor cat (long story - demand of an idiot). She would get into a bird or something and come up with them. They looked like grains of rice. Medicine from vet killed them pretty quick.

Nope. They're bigger than grains of rice. They look almost like this...

Lovely picture.....

But they're not as bright white. They're more transparent. Ryan & I always pick up his poop & this is the first time that I've seen these white strands. They weren't squiggling around either. It was just a small mass of white. I'm just wondering if he ate a plant yesterday on his hike that just looks like worms...or what it is. I was looking at the other symptoms of worms like lethargy, hungriness, etc. & Julius has none of those. Except for the vomiting this morning it has been business as usual.

I'll be bringing in a stool sample tomorrow though for the vet to take a look at & then go from there.

Tapes come in segments. These are likely common round worms and yes, if he is that loaded they certainly can cause vomiting.

But is it weird that we haven't noticed them before now?!? We always pick up his poop & they have all looked normal. Then today I just noticed some. There hasn't been any vomiting until today either. Does it just present itself like that....BAM!

I'm hoping he doesn't have worms...but I'll be taking the poo in with me tomorrow for a check just for peace of mind. Is it okay if I bring in the poop that I collected tonight. I have it in the plastic bag still....or should I collect a fresh sample tomorrow??

Scout came to us loaded with worms, hook and tape. She was vomiting a bit and had slimey icky poo with bean sprout looking worms in it. Any poo sample todays or tomorrows will be fine. She was wormed in the vets office and then at home 10 days later and it was not a big deal. Good luck!

After a certain load, yes, then they shed. And yes, he does have worms.

If I may ask, how do they worm them? Is it just medication or what?

She got a pill at home and a liquid at the office. No fuss no muss and Scout never missed a beat.

Gotcha! Thanks Shirley! I was just so surprised finding this in his poop today. It just took me aback.

Oh well....we'll deal with it tomorrow.

Any idea how we need to treat the yard?!? I read somewhere about Lyme....

I asked our vet about this, and please, someone correct it if the info was incorrect, but she told me other then our regular poop scooping detail, the other dogs were not in danger of getting worms nor was Scout in danger of a getting them again.

Oh thanks GOODNESS we didn't have spaghetti for dinner as I am eating right now as I read the forums <LOL>!!

Sounds like he's got worms...Ben had worms last year - got a dose of Panacur from the vet and we were good to go - he never missed a beat (or RottStock!)..

I'm wondering whether or not we should have started & should in the future start the Interceptor earlier. He's been on Interceptor since he was a pup & the vet recommends dogs taking it from May-Oct here.

I'll be calling the vet first thing tomorrow morning to schedule an appt. Luckily it isn't that hard to fit in a last-minute vet visit.

I'll update you guys tomorrow. I'm glad I didn't eat spaghetti for dinner either, Anne. Blech!

What wimps! I could blow that picture up to giant size and EAT with it sitting right in front of me! LOL! You may be able to just take in the sample and at least get him started on a deworming treatment if you cannot get an appointment quickly.

Nah, I'm really not a wimp...I've been out to dinner with Doug and his EMT buddies and they start talking about accident scenes and all the blood and guts and stuff...doesn't bother me at all...

Ben is on HW meds from March thru October/November...
