A cyst?

Hello I am new to this forum and found it by searching the net. My male Rottweiler has had a cyst on his rear for a few months now. My puppy rottweiler plays with him alot and must have knocked his cyst and it started to bleed. It's been bleeding now for over a week and just won't heal! It's about the size of a golf ball just to the right of his tail. I have had him to the vets and they gave him some antibiotics for this. They never made much difference to him and they then gave him an injection to try and make it go smaller, I am sure they said it would also be best to neuter him as he is 9 years old now. Any info on this on how to stop it bleeding would be great. Thanks

If you will hot pack it with moist hot towels 4 or more times a day for about a week, that should greatly reduce the size as well as promote the healing. After you have the size reduced that will also take the pressure off. Put some antibiotic cream at the opening of the cyst.

Thanks Judi, I will try anything to stop his bleeding. The house has his blood in a lot of places, even on the walls when he's walking by. Thanks again

you must be diligent but the hot packs will work. Place a wet handtowel in the microwave to heat and then wrap it so it is not too hot and you can keep turning it as it cools. Something to do while you watch TV..........

Yep, I know exactly what it is. The other thing that is helpful is to use hemorrhoid ointment which as a topical pain killer, products to shrink angry tissue and healing. Excellent stuff.

We are just cleaning him up again now with some of the advice from you, it's been like this in the picture now for over a week. He has stained a few parts in our home from this wound. I feel sorry for him and just want it to get better for him. Our local vet wants to neuter him as they think it might make it go down, but they also said it's in a tricky place to work on. They gave him an injection this week to try and make it shrink, I have to take him back in 3 weeks to see if they can get on with it. Thanks again for the help. Mark

These cysts are driven by the testosterone in the dogs system. The vet is recommending neutering because that will help with this problem. It's a shame he was not neutered before this , you could have avoided this problem in the first place.
I think you should do what the vet recommends and have him neutered, many of the adopted rescue dogs are neutered/spayed at an older age. I would have the pre-op blood work done before the neuter.

The hotpacks and cream should help till he has his operation....but it will not eliminate the problem.

Hope he feels better soon.

Gina

the dog I had that developed this type of cyst was a 9.5 YO spayed bitch. I treated it as described as yes, the surgery to remove it is tricky. It completely healed, came back once about 2 years later, treated the same and healed. I felt that the heat packing if and when it returned, was certainly easier on the bitch than the surgery. And so it was.

you might want that cyst to be checked for cancer. My rott started with a cyst similar to that on her foot, I found out yesterday it was cancer. My vet went threw the antibiotics and all that. Threw the research I've done the type of cancer she has is prone to come up on the hind legs and backside of trunk. Cancer is a large problem in rotts'. Just something else to bring up to the vet.

Most likely an Anal Sac Abscess. Not rare. May or may not reoccur

That is exactly what I was going to ask if it was. Our Pug gets them now and again. We put him in the tub and use the hand held shower head, set the temp to warm, and just let it run over the area,(hot packs next time) to keep it open and draining. And use ointment like Judi suggested. But the hemmoroid cream is a great idea. Will have to use that if he gets one again.

I don't think its an anal gland abcess...it looks to be too far down away from the anus. The abcesses I've seen at the vet's where I work are just to either side of the anus itself.

It might not be the anal sac, but definitely an abcess of some sort. Sometimes it is difficult to discern the exact site when an abcess ruptures as they do not always take a direct route and might make their way to the exterior in an oblique manner. Anal sac is the most likely, but certainly not the only possible explanation. Regardless, if one can heal it without the insult of surgery it is to be preferred.
