| Katy, my girl who has been going through the whole heart issue, had to be shaved in several silly places so that they could do the ultrasound, and attach the electrodes from the holter monitor. Anyway all of this stuff is done. (We are waiting for results about her heart reading). My question is: We all know what it is like when shaved hair grows back? VERY ITCHY! Well it is apparently driving her nuts because she is starting to scratch herself raw. A cone would not help because she is doing it with her back legs. Can anyone suggest an ointment or sauve that might help her to heal more quickly. (and maybe alleviate some of the itchiness???? Poor thing?! |

| Maybe the electrodes irritated her skin? Luna had a belly shave, but it didn't bother her at all. Lavender and Chamomile oils are skin soothers, antiseptic, and I'm pretty sure that Chamomile is an analgesic, too (they are milder than Tea Tree oil). I haven't used them, but you'd just have to dilute in water or a neutral oil, and the store where you get them could give you the correct ratio of essential oil to base for dilution. I wonder if putting socks on her hind legs would also help by not letting her nails dig in? |

| When Tonka had surgery on his leg, some of the shoulder area that was shaved became irritated. It was from the clippers used to shave the area. I used a little neosporin on it and it cleared up after a few days. Being a vet tech myself, sometimes when prepping an animal for SX it is easy for clipper burn to occur. You have to go against the direction of the hair growth to get a close shave and sometimes the skin is nicked.

| my poor Bruno would be shaved every 6 months for his exams. After awhile he got used to it, but the poor guy would get so itchy. I would first try an oatmeal based lotion (like aveeno), or gold bond powder. If that wasn't working I'd usually use a little hydrocortisone creme. If she's already scratched herself up you might want to try some neosporin to get the cuts healed. I wouldn't use gold bond powder on her if she's got a few cuts..it would sting. |

| Also, do you give her any fish oil in her diet? A tablespoon of salmon oil every day will help her skin from the inside out.

| When Roxie was spayed, she had a bellyshave too. It itched so bad, she could hardly sleep! I bought PetRelief - Anti-itch spray which seemed to work, though of course she jumped like she'd been shot whenever i sprayed her! you should be able to get something like that from your petshop. Or how about a cool, damp towel over it for some short term relief? Good Luck!! |
