Unhappy Nedd info on heart murmurs in puppies

Does anyone have any experience with heart murmur puppies?

We rescued (long story) an 8 week old Rottie puppy. She seems normal in everyway - loves to play for hours, eats, sleeps and starts again - she is a picture perfect Rottie girl. We had her a few days then got her into the vet yesterday - he says she has a heart murmur. We are taking her next week to a cardiologist to find out more. From what I can find on SAS - there is a nominal and ?? (cannot remember the term). This is breaking my heart. I am so scared.

We just had to let my Fila go two weeks ago and now this.

Does anyone have any experience with this type of problem?

Thank you

my advice..make up a list of questions for the cardiologist before you go..take advantage of visit and get as much information as possible from the doctor.

I wish you luck with your visit. Heart Murmurs can be nothing...or they can be something.

SAS and heart murmurs are related but are 2 different things. My rottie lived until 7 years old with SAS, Cardiomyopathy and a level 6 mumur. He was regulated by medications.

My puppy has a level 3 heart murmur. He's now just over year, and I'm taking him in for his ultrasound in a few weeks. We'll know more then. Here is a thread I started when I first found out.

http://www.rottweiler.net/forums/sho...ghlight=murmur

Do you know what level the vet thinks the murmur is? You won't know anything concrete till a cardiologist sees the pup, but at this point being only 8 weeks, it could just be an innocent puppy murmur common in puppies, and may grow out of. Vegas' murmur was not detected till he was 4 months old. The cardiologist only listened to his heart when he was 6 months, and told me to come back when he's done his bulk growing, so that the ultrasound (echocardiogram?) is as accurate as can be. SHe thinks its pulmonary stenosis, which is different and not as bad as sub-aortic stenosis.

There are other people on this forum with extense experience in this area. I know they'll pipe in. I'll keep you all posted on the results of our ultrasound in a few weeks.

Here is the site to the ROttweiler Health Foundation.

apart from the possibility of having a true cardiac problem...was puppy checked for parasites?
was it anemic in any way?
bloodwork?
sometimes, anemia, parasites, ill health can cause a temporary puppy heart murmur.

ps.on another note, about 6 years ago a lab puppy was taken to our clinic.it was brought by a friend of a breeder that wanted to put it down because it had a rare heart condition that typically shortens the lifespan to about 18-24 months.(sorry, forgot the conditions name).the vet wouldn't do it, and asked if she can adopt the puppy.the breeder was contacted, and said-sure,as is he's yours.
today, oliver is over 6 years old,he's a nut,was neutered, gets checked every now and then.condition still there, but holding-and he is still with us living the great lifeat the vets' house.one lucky lab!
