paw yeast infection Hi all, Coffee was at the vet's on Tuesday and they said his ears were in great shape, but we had them look at an area on his paw that he can't stop licking. The vet took a little shaving and said he had a yeast infection on his paw. Has anyone ever heard of this? Then she said to take the remainder of his ear medicine and rub it on his paw every day. There was only a little left, so my question is: can I go to the drugstore and buy monistat and put that on his paw or are we talking two completely different types of yeast infections? Thanks, Kate

Best to call the vet office and ask. In addition, out of curiousity, you can google the prescription medication name.

from what I was told yes..you can use human yeast cream..but I would call your vet and ask before you do it. What might be right for my dog may not be for yours. Your vet should be more than happy to refill a bottle of ear meds for you. I always pick up a bottle while I'm at the vets (for any reason) and keep it in my fridge.

| i have had problems before of itchy paws(yeast?fungal) and what has worked great has been lotrimin powder that is used for athletes feet.just sprinkle some on,walk dog around to keep from licking it off, and it usually resolves in about 1 week or so. but as always, consult with your vet.

Yes, yeast is yeast. The stuff for athletes foot works great also, like lotrmin, tincatin, you can get the generic form of these also. Read the package the ingredients are almost always the same. I would try the spray on kind. Another thing that I swear by, is yogurt. Some dogs are just more prone to having problems with yeast than others. Same as some humans. Yogurt puts the needed bactiera back into their system. It also helps with some stomach problems. My first rott, Roxanne, had problems with gas. She was so smelly, until I started putting a small carton of yogurt into her feed once a day. She also had many yeast infections in her ears, same thing, after the yogurt the yeast was kept at bay. Yogurt solved 2 major problems with my rott, and it is inexpensive, easy to find, and the dogs love the taste of it. I started our new rottie on yogurt immidately. And the gas has already stopped. Good luck, kimmee

Thanks for all your help & suggestions. I think I might start him on some yogurt. I'm sure he'll love it. We've been using the athlete's foot spray on him and it's gotten MUCH better. He's stopped licking it entirely and it looks better. Thanks again!
