Worms?

Vinnie has started to lick his behind every once in a while and it seems to be getting worse. I'm about to call the vet in a minute to get him checked out but I was wondering what else could it be besides worms? He has very soft stools often, but I never see any worms in it...

Any ideas?

Post Re: Worms?

Bum licking can be tape worms or anal glands.
Take him into the vet to get him checked out. The tape worms are usually seen hanging around the fur of the bum...they look like pieces of rice, or when the dog has a poop you can often see these tiny pieces moving around on the poop or dried pieces of tape worm on their bed.

Anal glands that need emptying often cause the dog to scoot on his bum or lick.

I'm not 100% sure but possibly his anal glands could be giving him trouble, maybe he needs them squeezed?

Re: Worms?

Speaking of worms... what does everyone use for a worming schedule with their puppies? I've only wormed when I have an actual worm problem, but does anyone ever do a preventative worming schedule if their dogs are around alot of other dogs? Meaning... does anyone ever worm once a year or every six months?

I also read somewhere that it was suggested to worm puppies at weeks 2,3,4,5,6,8,10 and 12. I have SO never heard of doing it that way and it seemed excessive to me... maybe it's not and I've just not kept abreast enough of what's going on with puppy maintainence.

Kimberly

I deworm my pups at 2 , 3, 5, 6, 8 weeks, using Nemex for the pups, does not require a vet visit, and I also deworm my bitch at the same time because if the pups have worms so will the bitch, but I use the equine version of nemex, it is 10x stronger, made by Farnum, Liqui-Care P(TM) Pyrantel Pamoate Liquid De-Wormer it deworms 1250 lbs,

I also deworm all my dogs using the equine dewormer monthly,

Re: Worms?

Tank was doing that, was checked by the vet for parasites, and his anal glands, both of which were fine...he said it could be allergies as well... asked if he was licking his paws....which he wasn't.
We never did find out what it was in his case, and he stopped, maybe just a minor irritation, but allergies were another possiblility our vet mentioned.

Ed - I thought the same thing - I was SHOCKED when I found out Ben had whipworms last year. He got Heartgard Plus - kills 'em all EXCEPT WHIPWORMS - he's now on Interceptor. I did everything necesary to prevent him from getting any intestinal or other parasites...or so I thought. No clue where he picked it up...all of the other dogs tested negative so I'm fairly certain it wasn't in our yard...

Hugs to the Vin-man...tell him I have some new tennis balls he can fetch for me!!!

Re: Worms?

Well, the vet trip went well. It's not worms. The doc expressed his glands but that's probably not it either... we think it is an alergy thing...possibly seasonal or possibly diet... they have been on Merrik for a while now but We are probably going back to California Natural.

He will get benedril for a couple weeks and hopefully that will be the end of it...

Anne, our boys are on Interceptor as well...
and Vin say's he's looking forward to those tennis balls at Rottstock.

I'll have a HUGE box for him by them - a friend of mine works at a country club and pilfers the stray tennis balls for me - I'll probably have about 100 by then!!!
