| Allergies? When I adopted Hercules a little over a year ago, he came to me with double yeast infections in both ears. It seemed to take a loooong time to clear them up, but I think I got ahead of his problem after many months. He swims in the summer so his ears are cleaned after he's done to dry out his ears. By fall/winter of last year, I noticed when I cleaned his ears they didn't seem to be bad at all. No more ear scrathcing either. So we went many months (maybe 2 or 3) over the winter where I didn't clean his ears. Now spring is here and I started to notice goopy eyes, so I cleaned his ears. A little gunk came out, but not a lot. I've also noticed more ear scratching than I have in the last 6 months. I am thinking he must have outdoor allergies - God knows he loves to go out and roll around in the grass. I've spoken to the vet about getting him allergy tested in the past, but they kind of poo pooed me on the matter. Which is fine, I am almost certain now it's not a food allergy like I first thought. Is it possible to give him something like benadryl over the counter to see if that will help? Or can the vet prescribe something similar for seasonal allergies?

| Re: Allergies? I have given Benadryl when Ben got stung by a bee, as well as giving it to my brother in laws rott'n girl when we ran out of Rescue Remedy on the 4th of July and the fireworks were freaking her out... I'm not sure if there are canine versions of allergy meds ...if your vet has poo-pooed the idea of testing for allergies I'd find a vet that will help you figure out what is causing it. Talk to the vet about the Benadryl... |

| My 7 year old rottie is allergic to the planet: bees, trees, grass, pollens, molds, different foods... We've had her tested; she is literally allergic to almost everything. We needed a hepa filter for the house because she's allergic to dust mites! Obviously, there is only so much we can do to keep the environment suitable for her. On top of her medication, we give her benedryl as needed. Your vet can tell you the dosage. Its very effective and makes the dog much more comfortable. |
