It is really bleeding alot, I can't believe I hurt her, the one who SHOULD protect her. Will she be OK? Or will it get infected? I'm sure she won't let me try that again.

its best just to clip a bit and clip often because the more you clip the more the nail recedes and stays shorter and that is what you want

Re: Help, cut nail to far

I feel really bad, this is her first experience with the clipper. The one I bought said it had a gard so this would not happen so I thought I was safe. Does this really hurt the dog?

It's called Kwik Stop. I forgot though what else you can use if you dont have that around. I cant remember if its flour or baking soda or a combination of both.

Hope someone else chimes in.

It's just what happens. Before I got my fence I walked Hercules twice a day for at least an hour each time and also poddy breaks. One time he just wore a nail all the way down to the quick and blood was everywhere. I was too stupid to figure out where it was coming from at first.

Cornstarch (I heard) can be used to help stop the bleeding if you don't have any quickstop. Buy some quickstop or something similar next time you go to the pet store. It's just a powder you dab on the nail with a qtip which helps stops the bleeding.

Sorry for the trauma you're going through! I too never recovered from the first time I clipped his quick and now we go to the pet store to get them done.

Re: Help, cut nail to far

You can get kwik stop, or similar product, at almost all pet supply stores. It causes the blood to coagulate, stops the bleeding. Any styptic powder should so.
Make sure you have it on hand when trimming the nails in case this happens again.

EDIT---seems your questions were answered while I was typing.

Re: Help, cut nail to far

Quick stop at the vet is first choice, if you don't have it get flour, it will stop the bleeding.

Always have the quick stop on hand while you are doing the nails, I made that mistake once too. What a nightmare. But no matter what, stay calm next time, I would suggest just do one nail, then make a big fuss over what a good dog she is, and give her a special treat. Then be done with it, and keep doing that, every day until you feel comfortable clipping the nails.

You can always cut more off, I take small steps if I'm not sure how close I am.
