Re: Help, cut nail to far

thanks for allthe help guys. The flour worked. Overall it was a horrible experience for both of us and I think I will pay the 5 bucks to get it done at the local groomer. This way I can relax while supporting local small buisnesses. Best of both worlds. I'm very squimsh when it comes to blood and loved ones. not for me.

I guess I am hard-hearted then, because that is what I do. I cut one of Logan's Kwiks he jumped and it bled, but I told him to lie still, go to the last foot and did it again! told him to lie still while I finished the foot and then gave him a bone to chew on. He wasn't real keen the next time I trimmed them, but I cut off a lot less to make sure I didn't knick him again so he had a good experience.

Re: Help, cut nail to far

Boris broke a couple of nails when we first got him, and yes, they really bleed. like everyone said, flour or corn starch works if you don't have quik stop. that is one reason the dremmel is a little easier, you don't have to worry you'll quick the nail with it. but the clipper is faster and quieter if you are careful. poor girl probably thought something was really wrong.

(listen to me..talking about nails. did Hilda's today in fact.)

A piece of bread (any type) will work in a pinch!

Re: Help, cut nail to far

When my pup got his first "baby" checkup at the vet they quicked one of his front toenails and it bled like nobody's business and it must have really hurt because he cried like he had been run over by a car. We can all say it doesn't hurt that much but I think it really hurts....ALOT.

At 2 years old, I clip his nails but now use the dremel. It is possible to cut the quick with the dremel but you definitely have more control (I've only quicked him once in 2 years and it was with the dremel). Anyway, believe it or not, my dog never forgot that first episode and still flinches that one nail on that one paw. I just ignore him but he still acts like it is going to hurt.
