x-rays, can I take them from the vets

I have never had to have x-rays done before and I am probably over reacting, but Chewie has become more and more lame. I want to take him in for x-rays and depending on the results, I will want a second opinion. Can I get a the x-rays from the vet to take to another??? Sounds kind of hinky to me, but if I pay for them, don't they belong to me. We never did recieve the x-rays from when he had the amputation done.

I've never had a problem taking xrays for review by another vet. I do think technically the films "belong" to the vet. You just sign them out, and return them when done.

I didn't have a problem getting Sonny's x-rays from our vet when my breeder wanted me to get a second opinion on Sonny's HD. I just returned them shortly thereafter.

Re: x-rays, can I take them from the vets

When Tank was x-rayed and found to have HD, the vet let us take them to the ortho surgeon, who then returned them to the original vet when they were done looking at them.

I think that this is something I should clear up before I get this done. Somedays nothing is easy

Re: x-rays, can I take them from the vets

My vet happily gives me the xrays when I request them. I then return them to the vet when we are done with them. I wanted the xrays to show the physio who was treating my dog.

I don't think I would deal with a vet who would withold the xrays when I requested them.

Re: x-rays, can I take them from the vets

In NJ the original films are considered part of the vet's "records" and must be maintained by the vet for I forget how many years. However, lots of vets will let you sign them out with the stipulation (and I guess fingers-crossed) that you'll return them. I believe that they are required to provide them to another vet for consultation/treatment, also to be returned. It's easier to get a signed receipt from the owner and let the owner take them.

I was not required by the vet to sign anything when I took the xrays.

Why wouldn't you simply ask the vet?

What a quaint society you must live in! No litigation paranoia? Actually, I think it's not a bad general practice to have the signed receipt in case they don't come back (not everyone is concientious) and a year later staff is going nuts trying to find the darn things for some reason.

Well, there you go again. Straight to the point.

Re: x-rays, can I take them from the vets

I moved to a new state and asked for my dog's x-rays to be forwarded to new vet... They wouldn't.... Sounds like I may have a unique situation???? Makes no sense to me and it certainly would be helpful to have my dog's history to see any changes that have happened since last x-ray??????

Hopefully it's easier for you...

Re: x-rays, can I take them from the vets

I did call the vet and the assistant didn't know. I finally heard back from the vet and the answer is no. They will send reports but no x-rays.
I'm not impressed and have spoken to another vet and they will transfer the actual x-rays to anywhere I want them to. Seems weird to me
