Cervical disc problem

It's obvious I'm a JUNIOR member...I just posted in the wrong place:( Sorry!
My 9 yr old male has a cervical disc problem. We've tried Deramaxx and he's now tapering off prednisone but his legs still aren't doing what his brain tells them to and he continues to lick and chew at his front feet as if they are numb or tingly. Anyone else have this problem?

Re: Cervical disc problem

You might ask your neurologist to look at the symptoms of NAD. NeuroAxonal Dystrophy, although not seen as much as it was when first recognized, is still around and will pop up now and then. When it was discovered as a problem in the Rottweiler, wherever seen, responsible breeders removed all related stock from breeding consideration. Not erased unfortunately.

Re: Cervical disc problem

Oh, dang, I just noticed the age was 9 YEARS! Highly unlikely it is NAD, so cancel my above post. Poor doggie. How long has he been on the pred? Did they use the Depo Medrol? A form of pred that is long-lasting and very effective for trauma induced things of this nature.

Re: Cervical disc problem

He's been on pred since 3/17 and now that he's tapering off the foot chewing has started again. He's no longer yelping as he was when we first noticed the problem. At that time he couldn't turn his head to one side and couldn't pick up a toy from the floor without pain. That's when we started the Deramaxx. Within a few days the rear legs were unsteady. That's when I got a second opinion and started the pred. It doesn't appear to be Depo Medrol though so I'll inguire about that. Have you had experience with accupuncture?

Re: Cervical disc problem

No, but I know the Depo Medrol is given as an injection, works readilyand I believe is effective for about a month. If given to auto accident victims immediately with whiplash, they do not have the after affects that they would have otherwise. He has not been on the pred long enough. It might take months for swelling to go down. I had a student with a Pyr (wonderful girl) who became paralized and was treated with rest and pred. It took a long time but she did recover. Your girl is older and we don't know, except I do know that she has not been treated very long. Pred is standard treatment for this kind of thing.
