| Please help! I have a 5 year old male rotti named Brahms who just had 10 seizures today, very aggresive. He started druling and than he started shakeing very badly and then became very scared and peed on me and started running everywere! I went to the vet with him and they gave him an tranqualizer and the seizures started beeing more soft until he calmed down and is now sleeping, but is motionless,he is just breathing! The vet told me that he has epilepsy and that i can not treat it! He gave me a medicine to give him every day for the rest of his life! He had the same seizures 2 or 3 months ago but less aggresive and until now he never did it again! I am very scared because a month ago i had a girl rotti who died becase of an infection eventough i went to the vet with her! PLEASE HELP ME! I can not lose him too! If you have any solution at all please tell me,maybe a clinic in europe! Sorry for the english! |

I think you should get a second opnion, honestly. Epilepsy can be treated by medication. My female Rott has epilepsy and was on phenobarbatol to treat her seizures. I do feel your pain and understand what you are going through. I would take him to another vet for a second opnion. Good luck and please keep us updated!

| Re: Please help! Very aggresive possible EPILEPSY case! IF the diagnose is right, your vet is right. Epilepsy can’t be cured but med. can reduce and in some/many cases stop the seizures. But one vet visit and prescription of pills will not per say keep your dog free of the seizures, not even IF it’s epilepsy. It takes time and lots of tests and observations to find the right pills and dose (and least for humans) What kind of examinations did your vet do to get the diagnose Epilepsy? I am NOT a vet but seizures are “results” of many sickness but the symptoms you described made me think about epilepsy. Best wishes and good luck!

| Re: Please help! Very aggresive possible EPILEPSY case! Thank you very much! I got a second opinion and it was the same, but it was over the phone with another vet! I have some good news because he is now feeling much better, he woke up and came near me and drank some watter! Please if you can give me more details into how your girl rotti got it and how it developed and how is the treatment going! How often does she have seizures? Is he going to live a life of suffering? I am very thenkfull that you answered! The doctor just looked at him because he said that in Romania, where i live there aren't any tests possible! He also took some blood for analisys that i will receve tomorow! Could it be that he eats eukanuba dog food? Could it be that he misses my girl rotti that passed away 1 month ago? The vet also gave me phenobarbatol and it seemed to work! He just ate like usual! Please advice me in what to do! Thank you! Last edited by b50egs; 03-13-2005 at 05:33 PM. |

| Re: Please help! Very aggresive possible EPILEPSY case! Here are a couple articles for you to read. I hope theywill help you to know what questions to ask your vet. Is the vet testing his thyroid as part of the bloodwork that was done? It sounds like the medication is working, you must be relieved about that! Seizures are very scary to watch. http://www.petplace.com/articles/artShow.asp?artID=1807 http://www.canine-epilepsy.com/FAQ.html The seizures are not because of the food you feed or from the loss of your female Rottie. |

| Re: Please help! Very aggresive possible EPILEPSY case! Sometimes the medication dose needs to be adjusted to find the right amount for your dog, but you need to talk to the VET about this. Can you call him? |

| Re: Please help! Very aggresive possible EPILEPSY case! We are not veterinarians and we don't have the knowledge to determine the proper dose for your dog. Do you have any vets in Romania that are open at night that you could call? Make sure he is in an area that he will be safe in when he has a seizure (away from walls, furniture, etc. that he could injure himself on). Get him back to the vet as soon as they open in the morning if you can't find a vet that is open tonight. I know how scary this must be for you. Hang in there, and get him to the vet as soon as you can. |

| Re: Please help! Very aggresive possible EPILEPSY case! I am talking from my daily experience with human epilepsy, but never the less, epilepsy is caused by a disorder in the brain and not caused by any kind of food or “grief”. No one can predict when, how often, how long and how the seizure will turn out not even in the same being…human or dog. “Stesolid” (don’t know the English word) can help and is given directly in a vein or rectal IF the seizures continue. Daily med. is another thing and you can’t expect this med. helps in a day and you are lucky if you find the right med. and dose to keep your dog totally free of seizures. Also many anti epilepsy med. have big side effects. You should take that into consideration. Best wishes

| Re: Please help! Very aggresive possible EPILEPSY case! You can't do anything but hold him and talk to him... he will hear you... (but be aware of bites) and if you can get him to a vet... let him go with peace and dignity. Sorry for you but this is the best I have to offer!

| Re: Please help! Very aggresive possible EPILEPSY case! I'm so sorry that this is happening to your dog and to you. As Damp said, this is a brain disfunction. It will never get cured. Possibly less frequent with medicine, but your vet has already told you he can't do no more. He's having too many seizures in one day. 11 already...that is too much. Please understand what I'm about to say. I'm not being heartless or uncaring. In fact, I'm being kind and loving. If this were my dog, I would give him this last evening and then take him to the vet in the morning and let him go with dignity. He deserves that much. If the medicine isn't calming him long enough to re-coop from the previous seizures, just think what this is doing to him. This is too horrible of a situation to have the beloved friend of 5 years go through. Having him be released from this is the most caring, loving gift you could ever give him. It breaks ones heart, and it's not something that is easily spoken out loud, but it needed to be said. For your sake and the dog's. I wish you much comfort in whatever choice you make. JoJo |
