Question about fatty cyst

Hey guys~ I took Payton to our vet for his annual check up and shots and to have this lump that has developed on his back leg "armpit" area to be looked at. I have felt it myself and it's squishy and pretty round about the size of a robin egg. Vet looked and felt around and said it's a fatty cyst pretty common in dogs and cats. She aspirated it for me and looked under the microscope and confirmed it's just fat cells. I asked about having it removed and she said that at this point don't. It's not bothering him it's not large and it's not life threatening. She did tell me to keep an on it and to call if it changed in texture or if it got really big. She told me that if he looses a few pounds, he weighed in at 114.4lbs, and was walked just a little more that it would probably go away.

So I ask you does all of this sound ok? Should I take the wait and see approach?

Thanks,
Terrie

Re: Question about fatty cyst

Chase had three fatty cysts. They never gave her any trouble at all. I would just keep an eye on it.

Re: Question about fatty cyst

Our oldest guy is now almost 10, and he has a 4 or 5 of them on his chest. I did the same thing as you, and the vet said the same thing. He has had them for over a year now, and they have not changed at all, neither has he, so we are not concerned.

Re: Question about fatty cyst

Years ago I had a Weimaraner that was prone to fatty cysts. He had them on his chest, back and forelegs. Because of his short, sleek coat and lean build, they were very noticable. When he was young I had 2 or 3 removed for cosmetic reasons, but as he got older, more of them appeared and I didn't want to subject him to the stress of anethesia and surgery. BTW, he was walked about 4 miles every day and was lean, and they never got any smaller, only bigger.

Re: Question about fatty cyst

Makita had her first one a few months ago on her leg. It has not grown in the time since it originated. They scraped it and checked, and advised the same, unless it becomes huge and bothersome, just leave it alone. Part of being old now...

Re: Question about fatty cyst

Thank you everyone I feel much better now. Vet said he is fantastic otherwise and to keep up the good work. This was the first time we had seen her, she new to the practice. She was happy that his diet was so detailed and healthy I had to brag about Rott.net of course She asked for the website so who knows maybe she will come and check it out

Thanks again.

Re: Question about fatty cyst

Toby had one right in the same spot and it was even the same size...(robin's egg) I just left it and it only got marginally bigger and never bothered him....I was pet-sitting a lovely female Rotty last week and she had the same lump/same size/same spot as well!...Must be a pretty popular spot.
