Mast Cell Cancer

My beloved 6 year old Dane/Rott, Scarlett had just been diagnosed with Mast Cell Cancer. She has about a dime-sized lump on her abdomen, which will be removed next Wednesday.

I’m wondering if any of you have had this experience with any of your dogs and what the outcome was?

Thanks

Re: Mast Cell Cancer

Most of the dog's I've heard of with this have been smooth coated. I don't have any personal experience but my friend does. She has a Vizsla that had one removed from a hind leg

I'll try to pm you and send you her email address

Re: Mast Cell Cancer

Our girl Raven was diagosed with that in the spring of 98,(she was 7) we lost her that summer. It started as a golf ball sized lump that came up literally over night on her belly, all the way back where her back leg joined her body. We found it on Sunday, and by the time we got her to the vet that Monday it was baseball sized. She had surgery Tuesday and our vet was not happy with what she saw.
I hope your outcome is better.

Re: Mast Cell Cancer

Our black lab had a mast cell tumor on her neck (injection sites ) when she was about 10 years old. It was about marble sized, stage 2 I believe. It was removed with good margins. No chemo or radiation was recommended. About a year and a half, later another one appeared on her left hind leg. This one was larger, a stage 3. It too was removed with good margins. Chemo was suggested but because of her age, I opted against it. The vet said...she might have a good six months and I did not want her feeling wiped. AT TAHT TIME, I completely changed her diet...(only human grade dog food, reduced carbs, supplemented with garlic, flax seed oil, and used some bach flower essences as well.) The tumors never came back and she lived until the ripe old age of 14. She died of complications from a stroke...but after the diet change, she was back to being a bouncy lab. You can do a search on here for Mast Cell and get more info. Also, a good website is www.caninesincrisis.org. Scroll to the info on mast cell tumors. Other good resources are the books The Nature of Animal Healng by Martin Goldstein, DVM and The Veterinarians Guide to Natural Remedies for Dogs by Zucker.

I am sorry you are going through this...but it doesn't automatically assume there is a bad outcome. I'll keep Scarlett in my prayers....Good luck

Re: Mast Cell Cancer

Our nonRott Clifford had a lump the size of a lemon on his chest about 1.5- 2 years ago. Just appeared over night. (scary how fast it was) Had it removed with good margins and so far so good... no additional treatment... He is 11 years old now.

Its amazing how fast they come up.. thats really scarey! I find it interesting how the change in diet may have helped.. would love to find out more. The relationship between a dogs diet and illness.

Re: Mast Cell Cancer

There is a very good site for dogs with cancer ... Canines in Crisis

There is a lot of information there including the relationship between carbs and cancer.

Sending good thoughts your way.

Cool Re: Mast Cell Cancer

Thank you for the replies everyone!

Just got word from my vet (the surgery was pushed back to today) that Scarlett did fine!! There was no indication that the mast cells spread beyond the tumor site.

She's coming home tonight!!!!

That is great news - will she need any follow-up treatments/
