Limping

Hi I'm new to this site and have a 6 and 1/2 month old rotti (Cheyenne) who occasionally lifts her front right paw, limps, and some days when pressure is placed on it it shakes a bit... she does not seem to be in pain ...she runs a plays, jumps etc with no problem...... could this be something serious or just because she is now starting to grow a bit more? it's not constant it's off and on

If anyone knows what this might be could you let me know?

thanks :)

Re: Limping

You may want to take her to the Vet and have him look at it. She may need xrays to determine if the elbow is dysplastic. It does sound as if a Vet really needs to see it though.

Re: Limping

Yes, a trip to the vet is in order. It could be many things from growing pains, to elbow problems, to a fracture, to something embedded in the paw, to a tick borne illness.

Also, if surgery is needed she is in that window of opportunity that makes surgery much more successful.

Good Luck.

Re: Limping

To screen for tick bourne diseases, I HIGHLY recommend spending the extra money on the full tick panel (around here, $100) versus just doing the Snap test (lyme, ehrlichia and HW). The Ehrlichia in the Snap test is the canis version only, and not the equi version.

Most likely, considering her age, it's pano -- microfractures of the bone due to growth. Pano often manifests as intermittant pain, sometimes switching between legs. Best thing to do is make sure she's not too heavy, limit her bounciness while she's showing signs of being affected (i.e. leash walks for a few weeks, no ball chasing, no jumping). There's also a supplement liquid that I used with Vikka which worked wonders. The name of the website was something about Natural Rearing and the formula is a panosteitis formula (homeopathic).

I'd get her in to the vet, let them xray and go from there. Pano often shows up on films as an area of inflammation/irritation.

Re: Limping

Harley my Rottie also had times when his front leg/s (sometimes it was the left one sometimes the right one) would shake. I took him to the vet for it when he was 5-6 months old. They did a neurological exam, x-rays for the front and hip x-rays. They told me evrything looked great. At almost 1 yr old Harley started limping on his left hind leg. I took him back to my vet and they told me he had torn both acl's. At this point I started to quesion my current vet so I asked my dog trainer for a good old country vet is what I wanted for the second opinion, that he could recommend. I took him to the country vet and told him what the other vet had said. He said he would do the x-rays but that there was definitely something wrong with Harley's hips (he said this without even touching Harley, just from talking to me and watching Harley). He did the x-rays on a Monday and called me when he was done, Harley had severe HD and told me that in less than a couple of months possibly weeks Harley would not be able to walk or get up from laying down, his hips were that bad. We were heartbroken and true to what he had said by that Thursday I had to help Harley get up from laying down. I asked the vet about his front legs shaking, he said it was because Harley was having to rely on his front body because his hips were in such bad shape. My recommendation to you is to take him to a couple of vets, make sure they are older and have lots of experience with HD. Harley has had two FHO surgeries, he still has not recovered completely. Ask to see the x-rays and take them with you for the second opinion. Good luck and I hope with your dog it is something simple and not HD.

Re: Limping

Hey.

My rott Dizzy had a limp on her left hind leg but she recovered in a few days.
We all gave her a lot of attention and she had no problems eating at all. The funny thing is that our pitbull also started limping. We take him for walks and he stops limping till he gets back home. I don't know if i should visit the vet or see if he recovers. Diesel's a smart pup but i'm not sure if there's somthing really wrong.

It took Dizzy about a week to heal. She's four years old. Diesel is one year old.

What do you think ?

Re: Limping

My 2 yr old male used to limp all the time as a pup. It would alternate from one to the other and back again. I had him to the vet so many times and they wanted me to take him to a specialist, but I didn't. People were telling me that he would grow out of it, and the it was just growing pains. Well, he did. He's fine today, and more active than ever. One thing I did do is take him off puppy large breed food, and it helped. Also, when the limping gets real bad, make him rest in his create..... Good Luck....
