| She is currently 8 months old. Apparently, she has a hygroma at the back of her front right leg. Here it is. . . I already brought her to the vet. Her vet gave her antibiotic(amoxicillin) 3 times a day good for 1 week. And Benadryl capsule 2 times a day also good for 1 week. The hygroma became a little bit smaller. My question is,should i continue the medication until the hygroma ends? Others say that i should pinch the hygroma so that the water in it could get out. What do you think should i do? Do you have suggestions for me. Or some medications that could kill the hygroma? Thanks. Last edited by ebony51204; 01-30-2005 at 07:41 PM. Reason: made changes to the link of picture |

| Re: Hygroma? do not pinch it. Yes, continue the antibiotics. Pinching it and discontinuing the antibiotics could really cause trouble. Try to keep her sleeping on her bed if you can to take pressure off the elbow. It should reabsorb. |

| Re: Hygroma? wouldn't the medicine affect her in anyway? what i mean is,if i'll be giving it to her for a long time. won't it affect her body? like some complications? some say that i should hot compress the hygroma. will it be effective? |

| Re: Hygroma? Bucky had this on his front leg when he was around 2 years old - I gave him the medicine till it was gone and discontinued allowing him to play soccer with the hard Jolly Ball he used to bat around the yard with his front legs. I was never advised to do any compresses so I don't know about that. It went away and never returned.

| Re: Hygroma? Normal antibiotics is one week to 10 days. That is hardly a long time. If you aren't going to run the course there is no sense in giving anything. It takes time to work. |

| Re: Hygroma? My dobie would get them from time to time. I just had to be very vigilent and insist that he sleep on a bed or padding of some kind. He'd really like to be on the hardwood floor . If allowed hard floors for long he'd develope hygromas . Make sure your girl doesn't lay on cement/concrete/hardwood/linoleum or any other kind of hard flooring . Even decking outside can aggravate the elbows . Here's a little info on them : Hygroma info Be sure she has got padding in her crate too . Hope it resolves for you soon

| Re: Hygroma? Hygromas are not harmful to the dog. They are a little unsightly, but not fatal. Fluid will fill up the sacks (similar to our bursus) in the elbow... usually due to the dog being a little hard on it's own skeleton. Hygromas are very common with many large breeds, and you'll usually see them on danes, wolfhounds, and yes, rottweilers. Make sure your girl has soft places to park herself. Keep her from laying on tile or wood floors directly. Follow your vets advice, run through the course of antibiotics as directed, while the hygroma itself is not dangerous, an infection is. Hygromas themselves will not cause a dog to go lame, however, if there is infection in the joint, you will see a definite change in gait. See the vet immediately if this occurs, and get the dog treated again immediately. The hygromas may or may not disappear on their own. If you're not showing your dog in the conformation ring, it's really not important to have them removed.... they're just a little more dog to love. Good luck.

| Re: Hygroma? Franks had one of those last summer. It has since all but dissapeared. We attributed it to lying on hard surfaces (as other have mentioned) to keep cool in the summer heat. Since Franks has taken to sleeping on his dog bed again, instead of the bathtub now that it's colder, the hygroma has gone away.
