vomiting

My poor boy is sick. He has vomited a lot of water and some grass. Normally he vomits and then is ready to go again, but not this time. he has vomited 4 times that I know about and is now sleeping by my feet. He is cold though and normally he is very warm. He is also curled up instead of stretched out. I covered him with a blanket, but I am worried about him. He had no interest in his food, so I am going to keep him off of it until tomorrow and if he doesn't eat he's going to the vet...

Re: vomiting

I took him in, they're keepig him overnight. Possible obstruction, less likely is pancreatitis according to slightly high levels in his blood work. On the plus side, I had them do preliminary hip xrays and they look good so far...

It's good you got him in early, poor guy. I hope they will know more by morning.

Smile Re: vomiting

When Toby had an obstruction, he couldn't keep water down and was curled up as well. Turned out to be a tennis ball in his bowel.I waited 24 hours before taking him to the Vet, but wish I'd done it sooner because there would have been less damage to the bowel.I'm glad you took your dog in right away.

Hopefully , your boy will just have an upset tummy!!

Happy thoughts coming your way from Victoria!

Re: vomiting

Well, he is at his regular vet now. He seemed more chipper, wanting to meet and greet the other dog at the vet and of course all the people. He showed interest in food so that I think is a good sign. He seemed more like his old self. They are going to keep him on IV fluids for the day and try a little bland food and water and see if he can keep it down. Hope for the best...

Re: vomiting

So far so good, both a small amount of water and food are staying down, I'll be calling them back around 2:30 if I don't hear from them sooner, and hopefully I won't - no news is good news in this case.

Re: vomiting

They still can't say for sure. I decided against the barium test for now and am doing a food test with him. They gave him water and ice chips this morning, food around 11 and will be giving him food every hour. It's pretty much wait and see at this point. Still not vomiting though I guess, because there has been no phone call to me. I'm keepingmy fingers crossed that if it was a blockage of some sort it is moving though now...

Re: vomiting

Well they did a fecal test for parvo which came back negative. He hasn't pooped since yesterday morning that I know of, and I didn't see if it was solid or not. I saw he was taking a poo and went to get dressed. I meant to check out the pile this morning, but forgot. He also doesn't tend to poo on a leash so I don't know that he will even try until he is let go in the back yard again.

Re: vomiting

I just thought the pooping may give you an idea if its obstruction, or a viral infection. I had quite the scare last week with my pup. He was on IV for a day, all tests came back negative, and I'm glad the IV was making him feel better. THey ended up giving him mitranidasol? or something like that. My guy had bad diarhea for a few days. You should check what that poop is like that he did. No point in bringing that in for testing, the snow contaminates the sample. THey must have been able to "catch" a sample if they did a test for parvo. Did they also do a fecal test for parasites? What exactly was odd about the blood test? If electrolites were low, thats probably from dehydration due to vomiting. Did it indicate anything else? What are the vets speculating he has?

If you've done all the tests, and he's not getting better, I would suggest the barium or more x-rays. I believe BeverlyC? had similar symptoms, and on day#11 they finally found the obstruction, fuzz. Fuzz don't show up on X-rays too well.

Re: vomiting

They stuck a q-tip up his butt for the sample. LOL, no snow here so I don't need to worry about that! I don't believe they looked for parasites since it was vomit problem and not diarrhea. The blood work show elevated enzymes that normally point to pancreatitis, but they weren't high enough to make that a sure thing. If he were to continue to have problems they would have to diagnose pancreatitis with an ultrasound. He hasn't vomited since last night, they have been giving him small amounts of bland food and water throughout the day - so far nothing. They are sending him home with the catheter in place incase the vomiting starts up again. If all food stays down he will have the catheter removed tomorrow morning. They didn't want to give him medication that would increase mmotility too much for fear of intestine rupture. Metronidizol was given to my boxer, it helps irritated bowels to relax and stools to firm up. The diagnosis is still unknown, but as long as things are moving through and there is no vomiting that is a good sign. I think he ate something that did not digest well and is causing intestinal upset as it moves along. I just hope he can pass it on his own.
