Re: vomiting

I agree with Sabina, you should/need to take the next step. Duce had a partial blockage - he did not eat and was very listless. He ate about a billion rocks/pebbles. We did the x-ray and barium test and sure enough there were the rocks. He was held at the vets for a day and given treatment. Please take the next step. Good luck and keep us posted.

Re: vomiting

Since he is eating and acting normal the vet said to wait and see. If he stops eating and becomes listless again he is going back for more test probably including the barium series.

But he's not acting normally - POOPING is part of acting normally. He isn't pooping. Why wait?? If your vet won't do the barium did you ask WHY? I hate to think the 'wait and see' attitude form the vet may cost this dog his life, or at least a significant portion of his intestinal tract...

Our lab/GSD eats socks and plants...I always know when she's gotten one - shes frantic to get outside to eat grass and puke...and I always see one sock laying on the floor upstairs. This is gross, but I've started picking up the vomited socks, putting them in plastic bags and leaving them on the counter with a note for my mother in law since they are her socks being eaten. What does the note say? "YOU will be paying to have any obstructions removed from Baby's intestines because YOU do not pick up your socks when you know damned well she'll eat them!". Harsh? You betcha!

Just the other night she was nibbling on a poinsettia plant to try to make herself vomit! I gave her a few tablespoons of peroxide and she puked up TWO socks and several leaves...left them for MIL along with a note as well! We don't have any plants down here because I KNOW the dogs will get into them...I can't understand why they keep leaving that crap out when they know the dog(s) will get into them!

Re: vomiting

It's not uncommon for a day or two to go by without pooping after a bout of diarrhea, because there may not be enough volume in the intestinal tract to initiate it, so that in itself doesn't say too much, since there is more than one potential reason for it. That's why I thought she should really pay attention for any indication that he is not up to snuff, and have the barium test done with any indication of discomfort or distress.

The reason the barium test was not done is because dmoniz opted not to do it, not because the vet refused or didn't recommend it. It sounds to me like the vet is doing the best he can.

Re: vomiting

That's exactly right, if ya don't eat, ya won't poop. If he stops eating again he will go in for a barium series, but at this point it would be overkill and just add stress on him that he doesn't need. He needs his routine back, all my dogs do.

Arrow Re: vomiting

He pooped! There was nothing in it so we still don't know what caused all the trouble, but he finally pooped and it was mostly solid! Never thought I would be so happy about my dog pooping.

Re: vomiting

LOL! Well, Congratulations! I have spent 4 years studying the nuances of poop and its origins due to Luna's intestinal disease, and it didn't take long for me to develop a newfound respect for the Importance of Poop (it truly is important stuff)!

One solid poop is good, four more days of solid poop is even better. Keep your eye on him for the next few days to make sure the Poops of the Future hold the same promise....

Re: vomiting

Will do. I really want to find something that caused all this trouble. I even asked my husband to hand me a rock so I could smush the poo around hoping to find "something".
