I'm just curious...whenever Toby gets a "Hot Spot" I clip away the fur and put something on it to DRY it...so it gets air and doesn't travel under the fur and get worse...Is Polysporin an ointment? Wouldn't that make it moist?I've never used Polysporin so I don't know...I'm just asking.

Re: Itching

Polysporin is an antibiotic ointment that I have been putting on his dry skin just above his nub. So far, I have kept the dry areas from turning into sores. He has been itching due to being so dry. Between that and the oatmeal bath along with the benedryl to help with the itching, so far, so good, no real severe spots. If he isnt doing better next week, he goes back to the vet. Cross your fingers though.

Re: Itching

I'm glad the oatmeal bath helped...at least the poor guy can get some sleep now! Oatmeal works for contact allergies because it removes oils from the coat - and it doesn't distinguish between healthy oils and those that cause allergies, soooo......Judi W's suggestion of adding oil to his diet will help replenish the healthy oils removed by the shampoo. I'd do both - bathe in the Aveeno, add oil to his diet.

Glad to hear it Liss! My guy Boone has a horrible flea allergy .. they get so frantic with the itching it is horrible to see. I couldn't pet him anywhere as any physical contact made him start itching all over again! He had nasty sores opened up and was just a mess. I had the vet give him a shot of pred or dex (not sure which it was) just to stop the itching cycle .. then managed it with benedryl and aveeno after.

We have had many a battle with hotspots .. but that's another thread! LOL!

The suggestion to add oil to his diet is a good one .. I'm a firm believer in healing from the inside out.

Non itchy vibes being sent Atticus's way!
