Worms?

Hi,
One of my 5 week old puppies left something in his/her stools! I plucked it out and at first, thought it was a piece of string, but on closer examination, it looks like some sort of worm! it is about 2-3 inches long! What do I do? Please help me!

Re: Worms?

most likely it's a roundworm

Take some puppy stool samples to the vet (and the worm if you still have it) they will test the stooland dispense the right type of wormer to rid your pups of them

Re: Worms?

Thanks Frontier,
I researched and found that, Indeed, they are Roundworms. Got medicine from vet and treated my Delilah and her pups. You "shudda" seen the worms that came out of the pups on the first day of treatment! Poor Rotties, some are still excreting a worm or two out! I will treat again in two weeks.
I thought that I had to wait 8 or so weeks to treat for something like that. Turns out that it can be done at 2 weeks after birth! The worms are VERY COMMON, so anyone reading this, PLEASE get your pups treated, or get a stool sample to the vet after thay are born. Most pups get worms in-utero or through the milk of the mother!!!
Also, the worm eggs are very hard to kill, so please wash your hands if you help clean the puppy area (as I did). These worms can do MAJOR DAMAGE to people!

Re: Worms?

Good you had that taken care of. I had a foster pup come to me and I noticed one worm in her poo and so got her wormed her next two stools were all worms and that was it. It was soo gross. Pretty much every puppy will have roundworms so those need to be taken care of!
