stop licking

Bastian has a sore between his toes on his back foot. He has done one round of antibiotics to settle it down. I'm wondering if it isn't a fungus of some sort. I need to be able to keep him from licking it. I can put a booty on it while we're here, but he'll pull it off when we leave him. I have an e-collar, but not sure if I can/should leave him in his kennel all day with it on. If it doesn't show signs of improvement in about 2 days on an anti-fungal cream it will be back to the vet.

Any ideas???

Re: stop licking

I will try that as well. He doesn't bother it much unless we draw attention to it, like looking at it to see if it's getting better, putting cream on it and of course you can't look at it unless you spread his toes. I'm sure when he's home alone though, he gets bored and licks. He doesn't limp or show any signs of pain, just licking.

Re: stop licking

Put vicks on the hair surrounding the sore (not on the sore but around it). That usually works pretty well. Bitter apple evaporates pretty quickly

Re: stop licking

Will Vick's make him sick if he decides it's worth the taste? I was told that Lamisil will most likely cause diarrhea and I'd like to avoid that if at all possible.

Re: stop licking

No, you aren't going to put on a tablespoon, just a small amount to coat the hair around the area. He won't lick it but even if he does it is not toxic

Re: stop licking

Ok, so the vicks didn't work. I just put a bit around it and before I left he was licking with lips curled. When I got home he had thrown up. Not sure if it's connected. Do I just put the e-collar on him and hope he doesn't hurt himself in his crate? It is 48"x36", I can get in it with him.

Re: stop licking

I once sprayed all the pebbles I could see in my back yard with Listerine to get Toby to stop eating them. I put some Listerine on a teaspoon and let him taste it to show him how gross it was...He licked up about 3-4 teaspons before he decided;"Nope.Don't like it." Maybe your pooch just hasn't decided he doesn't like the Vick's...?Try again? Maybe there's something more disgusting you could smear on...PS....Toby stopped eating pebbles.

Re: stop licking

my rottie (Isis) had a bare spot...because of fleas...when we got her...she wouldn't leave it alone either.
one day we went to the dog store to see if they had anything that would help.
we saw an ointment "Biocaine" (it's in a blue and white plastic bottle).my husband suggested trying it..cuz it had lidocaine (just a touch) to help numb the area so that it won't "itch" while it heals,as well it has a "nasty" flavor to help them not want to lick it..it worked GREAT with in a few weeks of use the bare spot was gone...AND...6 yrs later when she has a spot she just WON'T leave alone...I bring out the bottle and ask her if she needs the "nummy lotion"..she gives me this dirty look and stops bothering it.
Good Luck
