| swallowed something tonight while doing laundry, Hilda nabbed something, I think a pair of underwear. Boris and Hilda begin to play tug with it, and when Hilda let go, Boris swallowed it! Dang it was weird. If I'd known he was actually going to swallow the cloth, I would have grabbed a corner and pulled. I never imagined he would actually swallow something like that!! So, I've called the vet, but she didn't call back. this is unusual, but something could have messed up iwhen I punched in the pager number. He is eating and drinking, and acting fine. I guess I just follow him around the yard for a few days? what to watch for? (besides some really dirty underwear) |

| Re: swallowed something I'm no expert and I've never experienced a blockage, but from what I've heard the symptoms happen quickly. Vomiting violently, can't even keep water down. Obviously no poo. I hope everything is okay. I would definitely insist on getting ahold of the vet though just to make sure. Please keep us posted.

| Re: swallowed something This could be in left field because I've never had something like this with dogs, but when my cat ate half a stuffed mouse before I could get it from him the vet told me to buy cat laxative (for hairballs) and that would make it go smoothly. I'd still talk to your vet but if you have dog laxative you could try that. Hope everything comes out alright |

| Re: swallowed something when storm ate a 15 ft leash i made him throw it up to do this you feed them so that they stomach is full (this helps gather the object you want to bring up) then put a tablespoon of table salt in the back of there mouth and then chase that with a tablespoon or so of peroxide and it will come up... but this needs to be done very shortly after ingestion..... |

| Re: swallowed something Unless you saw him actually swallow it, he might have just stashed it someplace. I thought one of my dogs ate a sponge I'd been washing the car with, did the peroxide thing (he really threw up and threw up) and then later found he'd hidden it in the garden! For him to swallow something that fast in a gulp it must have been a very small thong or a baby sock |

| Re: swallowed something I actually watched him swallow it. It was about a mouthful of a soft type of cloth. I think it was some of those 'lovepats' underwear. there was a moment I could have gotten it out of his mouth, but I didn't believe it was really going down. by the time I realized it was going down, it was all in his mouth and down. It wasn't a big gulp and swallow, he must have had most of it down his throat before I realized he wasn't just gathering it in his mouth. I guess I better understand the word dumbfounded, because I was just too dumb to do anything when I could have. Rotweiler.net was down, (was it for everyone?) and my vet didn't return my call. I fed him, he wolfed it and kept it down, he drank water, he was barking at something outside, so I didn't call the vet again last night, I will 1st thing this am. |

| Re: swallowed something It may have been a "Bounce" dryer sheet instead of underwear. Let's hope so. A couple of teaspoons of Peroxide really work immediately after the injested item. And Lblax, the idea to feed a little something BEFORE the Peroxide, is a good idea. I didn't think of it. My dog puked up the offending item (on an empty stomach) but I can see how much easier it would have been with a little food. Good tip to remember. |

| Re: swallowed something Keep an eye on him. My friend's Doberman was obsessed with hair scrunchies and had to have two of them removed via surgery. Blockages can kill, or make a dog septic as part of the intestine gets cut off from blood supply. Not trying to be a nay-sayer, just want you to have the full picture. Signs to watch for: decreases in behaviour, inappetance, decreased water intake, vomitting/wretching, no more stools passing, palor in the gums or prolonged capillary refill. To see capillary refill in yourself, press down quickly and firmly on the pad of your finger and let go quickly. See how it blances from a nice pink to white (unless your hands are really cold) and then quickly becomes pink again.....this is capillary refill. It should take less than 2 seconds. Delayed cap refill indicates either significant blood loss or compromised circulation. In a dog, you can check on the gums (if you can find a non-coal black spot). Hopefully it will pass and the dog will be just fine!

| Re: swallowed something When one of my rotties had an intestinal obstruction from a piece of rawhide, her symptoms were: Panting and pacing around, walking sort of hunched over (from abdominal pain), copious and frequent vomiting, vomiting bile, avoiding food, excessive thirst with vomiting soon after drinking and generally behaving and appearing as if she didn't feel well. The symptoms started about 18 - 24 hrs after she swallowed the thing that caused the obstruction. I hope yours passes the item without any trouble.

| Re: swallowed something thanks all. I spoke to the vet's office at 8 am. I am going to keep careful watch and although they gave me a list of things to watch for, there is more info here! I wish I had given peroxide last night, but didn't know if that was just for poisons or if it was also for when they ate something of 'substance'. It is too late to induce vomiting, isn't it? I know it was cloth and I have a good idea it was underwear because I saw the dogs playing tug with it. when Hilda let go because I told them to, he started swallowing it. I can't believe I just stood in front of him watching it disappear!! I didn't believe he would swallow it!! |

| Re: swallowed something Bounce dryer sheets and a knee high belonging to my DW have both been snagged and eaten by Zoe. The Bounce never reappeared, but the knee high arrived about 48 hours later. We watched for symptoms, after she swallowed the stocking, but didn't see anything and she was fine. Hope that yours is OK too! Actually, Zoe is much more interested in clothing before it goes into the laundry. LOL |

| Re: swallowed something Quote:
Really made me go through the house several more times and puppy proof better... He still has an affinity for hair scrunchies and bands, and will steal them off surfaces if he can see them - he won't take food off tables or counters, though. Good luck on a happy ending!
