Lump On Nubbin

Found a lump on Perle's nubbin last night - I called the vet this morning and they can't see her until next Thursday but to call if the lump starts to bother her or develops an opening.

Last night I found Perle to be excessively licking her nubbin area. I checked and this is when I found the lump. It is at the end of the nubbin, underneath and to the side. It is about the circumference of a pencil eraser and raised up about 1/4". It is not on the skin, but underneath, firm but not rock hard.

This was the first I saw her worrying it and she was not bothering with it this morning. However, last weekend, Rocco was excessively licking that same area on her. I made him stop (although he went back at it a couple times before finally leaving it alone). Thinking he was just being a goober because she wasn't licking it, I didn't think to check for anything at that time.

Any ideas on what this could be?

Re: Lump On Nubbin

Ok this is a long shot but we dealt with something similar when Payton was about 1 and a half. When his tail was docked the skin healed funny and there was a little hole leftabout the diamether of a chop stick(I know this probably sounds weird but it's hard to describe) One day he decided rolling in a mud puddle would be fun and some dirt got caught in this hole we washed him up but didn't get that area cleaned up as well and it got irritated and swelled. Thinking it got infected we took him to the vet and he cleaned it out and closed the hole.

Sorry if this isn't much help.

Re: Lump On Nubbin

(It took me a while to figure out what you meant by "nubbin") It could be a sebaceous cyst. Or it could be something else entirely, without being able to see it, nobody can diagnose it, sorry. Let us know what the vet says.

Re: Lump On Nubbin

Sounds like something that is draining, to attract Rocco to it. Maybe a small abcess from an insect/spider bite. Ask the vet if hot compresses would be good to try.

Re: Lump On Nubbin - UPDATE

Vet appointment today. He said it was a cyst that would either break on its own or resolve back into the tissues. He said the most they would do is pierce it with a needle to drain it if it bothered her. Otherwise, nothing needed to be done. What a relief. That's kind of what I thought it looked like but wasn't going to take any chances.

On a side note, my little girl weighs 88 pounds!!! Gads, when did THAT happen?? She still looks lean - you can feel her ribs without effort, she has a nice tuck, and a really defined waist so I'm not worried, she's a muscular little girl! But geez, she only weighs 10.5 pounds less than Rocco! He appears to have added some muscle, though, so I'll be interested to see what he weighs when I take him in next month for his yearly.

Thanks for all your replies and interest!

Re: Lump On Nubbin

If you will apply hot compresses to it as often as possible it will help reduce the inflamation.

Re: Lump On Nubbin

I believe the 'nubbin' is the tail.

This is the confusion when people do not use anatomical terms.

Yes, sorry for the confusion. I thought "nubbin" was understood as so many people seem to use it in reference to the docked tail. In my mind, I don't think of it as a tail because it's not all there. I'll remember to be more specific in the future, my mistake. I will try hot compresses to see if it goes down any but there really is no inflammation. It basically just looks like a blind pimple with no redness or anything. Thanks again for your input!
