Cut Quick Question?

Last night we were cutting Payton's nails and DH accidentially cut his quick....well Payton pulling at the same time Ang was cutting. Anyway it bled for quit some time, about 40 minutes. We called the ER vet right away they told us to mix up baking powder and water or flour and water into a paste and apply it or use dry cornstarch and put his foot in it. We used the baking powder and then the flour and applied pressure.

My question now is I am worried that it might get infected when he goes outside is there something I can to to prevent this? I will wash his foot with soap and water everytime he comes in but beyond that is there something I should do? AND is there something else I should have in the house just in case this happens again? Steptic pencil, etc?

I have knicked his quick myself but it didn't bleed nearly as bad as it did last night. I will admit I was a bit scared the ER vet assured us that it would stop and he would be just fine. Payton isn't exactly the easiest dog when it comes to cutting his nails. One of us cuts while the other praises and gives treats. He's gotten MUCH better about it now that we use this "system" but he's still not thrilled about having it done.

Thanks for your help
Terrie

Re: Cut Quick Question?

WEll it does hurt when you cut the quick, so if you've cut his quick before, thats probably why he fights you when cutting nails. Some people here use a rotary tool, with the appropriate grinder that doesn't heat up. You may want to try that since your dog already hates getting his nails clipped. How often were you clipping his nails? If they grow out long, you can't trim too much off till the quick recedes.

Yes there is a product out there, Quick Stop?

It should not get infected. He should be fine, even going outside. If it has stopped bleeding he is able to go outside without the fear of it getting infected. To make yourself feel better though, you could put a sealing layer of clear nail polish on the end of the nail but since he was cut, don't expect him to welcome you with open paws!

He had ALWAYS hated getting his nails cut But I know that clipping the quick doens't help the situation. I have been on this forum for 3 years and read everything about different ways to cut nails and have come to the conclusion that some dogs just don't like it. As far as the rotary tool goes he HATES that even more. We took him to a vet when we first moved down here and they used it on him and heated his nail up, please he's got a thing about noises too. He sees the dremel and runs for the hills and we don't see that vet anymore either.

We clip his nails about once a week so they aren't overgrown. They did get a little long this summer after the baby was born because I couldn't get down on the floor but they are back to good again now.

Can I get quick stop at Petsmart?

Thanks,
Terrie

Thanks SM Clear nail polish I would have never thought of that one. Oh I am sure he will let me do that with a little persuasion and some steak As for the cutting thing we are going to have to win his trust again.....and keep DH away from the clippers

Re: Cut Quick Question?

Another thing, do you have like a card table or some other table high off the ground? Just a suggestion but when Sophie was younger I could only get her nails done if she was on a grooming table or some other "off the ground" station she was less likely to wiggle. I also had to keep her on a prong and secure it to something so she couldn't wiggle away. I know it SEEMS cruel but it was the only way to get hers done. And it took no time at all.

Re: Cut Quick Question?

Super glue works really well, I don't know if I'd use nail polish. But you can get a product specifically for this in pet stores. I would get some to have on hand in future (especially since actually having quick stop on hand means you probably won't nick a nail again, like washing your car means it will rain ). Don't worry about infection, if it's stopped bleeding, it's probably just fine (personally, unless it kept opening up again, I wouldn't put anything on it at all).

Yes, you should be able to buy Kwik Stop at Petsmart. We also use a doggy nail file. It takes longer but it might be a way for you to show your dog that cutting nails doesn't always have to hurt.

Re: Cut Quick Question?

I am going to go out on lunch and pick up Kwik stop(thanks for the right spelling) Spidey you're right if I have it in the house I probably won't ever need it

Thanks for all of your help everyone, as always you guys are the best~ I just talked to my DH he feels absolutly terrible about this, I usally do the clipping he does the treats and praise. There was a little bit more blood on the kitchen floor this morning when I left for work but when I checked his foot it had stopped so it must have been from earlier and DH said there wasn't anything more when he got up. Now if we can just get him to stop licking it

Re: Cut Quick Question?

Just wanted to thank everyone again for your help....and I would like to say that I feel like an idiot for the Kwik mis-spelling. You think after reading this board for so long I would have known better. Anyway the Kwik Stop worked wonders. I went to Petsmart on lunch and brought it home. Of course Mr. Antsy Pants can't stay calm when Mommy walks in the house and it started bleeding again. I put the gel on right away and it stopped instantly...man that stuff is good~

Re: Cut Quick Question?

Our trainer gave us a great tip. Do you have poles in your basement or garage? You tie your dog as tight as you can to the pole (Duce wears a muzzle) then one person dremmels while the other holds the dog's butt (prevents them from spinning around the pole. We have been doing this for a week and it is wonderful. . .and let me tell you Duce hates I mean hates getting his nails done. We tie him up for the front paws, when we dremmel his back paws he seems not to freak out as much and will lay on the ground while we do them. Just a thought!!!
