vomiting

I want to pass on a warning for everyone with a dog with vomiting. It is with great sadness that I have let one of my dogs down and I hope others will just remember his story. Bugsy was a five year old male who every now and then would vomit, no big deal, upset stomach. Then the vomitting started on a weekly basis. We thought upset stomach let's try different foods that are easier on the stomach. We tried everything we could think of and of course he started to loss weight. In no time he was extremely skinny but trying to eat but everything would come back up. We had a vet appt. for tests and full checkup but still thinking major upset stomach or something of the sorts. The morning of Bugsy's vet appt, he collapsed. We picked him up and off to the vet we went as fast as we could. After tests vet was thinking blockage or ate something and blocked him up. That afternoon she decided to do surgery, she took out a grapefruit size mass. It was sent off to the lab and we waited for test results, hoping he ate something and his system just walled it off. During the wait he started having seizures, we rushed another dog in for a blood transfusion. Bugsy died that night, alone. Test results came back the next day, it was a very fast growing cancer that apparently is found in younger dogs in the intestines.
I know from now on if I have a dog that vomits for no know reason I will be taking them in for a full work up. I feel so bad Bugsy had to go through all he did because I was thinking he's five it must be upset stomach or IBS. The thought of cancer never even crossed my mind. Please let Bugsy's illness be a lesson to us all.

Re: vomiting

First, let me say how sorry I am for your loss of Bugsy. Thank you for sharing this story. Definately will have me thinking twice when Elmo starts to vomit for no apparent reason. I just had a bout of vomitting with him, but we did take him to the vet and it was just intenstial upset.

Thank you again for sharing your story.

Re: vomiting

Kasey,

I'm so sorry for your loss. Thanks for sharing, many people, including myself would have chalked it up to an upset stomach considering the dogs age. If I noticed anything like that I will take my puppy to the vet immediatley, your information may safe many dogs here. I hope you realize though even if you acted sooner, with cancer not much can be done so don't be too hard on yourself.

Again, I'm sorry for your loss.

Re: vomiting

Oh my, I'm so sorry, don't beat yourself up and I commend you for coming here to alert other people of your tragic story . You feel bad enough you surely don't need anyone telling you what you should have done, not that anyone would but you're suffering enough. I don't know what is going on with our breed bc I know of a 2 year old CH rottie boy who recently died as well and they discovered he had liver cancer , he was just a baby too. I lost my one rottie boy to liver/spleen cancer as well when he was 7 yrs. old.

Anyway, my heart goes out to you, you didn't know, so take it easy on yourself.

Judy
