Talking Help! my dog ate chocolate!

Ok, I'm pry over reacting, but this is my first dog and I love her! She ate about half a box of Junior Mints that were sitting on the end table (Stupid of me to leave them their!) I've heard that chocolate can kill dogs? she's a year old and I'm guessing weighs about 90 pounds. Should I give her something, or do something?

Re: Help! my dog ate chocolate!

You might call your vet. I think that's milk chocolate and should not have enough theobromine in it to be a problem, but better safe.

Give them a call, then we'll all feel better.

Re: Help! my dog ate chocolate!

Remember, those are simply dipped, they are not solid chocolate. Generally the "danger" business is when a little 15 pound dogs eats a pound of chocolate.

Re: Help! my dog ate chocolate!

My guy ate 1/3 of a muffin, and he got the runs pretty bad. You can give her an oz of peroxide to induce vomiting and avoid after affects the chocolate if any, but the amount does not seem toxic. It's pure chocolate, baking cocoa and dark chocolates that are more toxic than milk chocolate, and they need to consume quite a bit. She'll probably have the runs for a day or so.

Re: Help! my dog ate chocolate!

I have used the peroxide method to induce vomiting .... it is 1 oz per 10lbs of dog and it works like a charm.

YIKES...that's a LOT For a 90 lb dog, that's NINE OUNCES of peroxide. I sincerely doubt you'd even be able to get that much down them.

The ratio I have is one TEASPOON per 10 lbs of body weight. For a 90 lb dog, that would be three TABLESPOONS. I have seen 2 tbsp recommended here on the forums, too. Nothing close to 1 oz per 10 lbs!

To Induce Vomiting and Prevent Poison Absorption
Giving the dog Hydrogen Peroxide will induce the dog to vomit. A 3 percent solution is most effective. Give one teaspoon per 10 pounds of body weight of the dog. Repeat every 15 to 20 minutes, up to 3 times, until dog vomits.

Really? I didn't know you could use that much. I only gave an ounce or so the last time, and within a few minutes he was vomiting.

Re: Help! my dog ate chocolate!

Blaise got into mistle toe about 5 years ago and wasnt' sure if he digested any... so

I also recall mixing my peroxide w/ water to make it easier to go down. I used a turkey baster (sp) to insert into the dogs mouth and throat... easier than trying to spoon feed...

Re: Help! my dog ate chocolate!

Once I thought my dog got into some chocolate, and I called the CSU Vet Hospital and according to their calculations, my 80 pound girl would have had to eat at least TWO POUNDS of chocolate to get sick.

The theobromine is absorbed in the bladder, they said, so make sure your dog drinks and pees a lot so it does not sit around in there. I float kibble in the water bowl to encourage drinking with mine.

Re: Help! my dog ate chocolate!

The age old remedy to induce vomitting is to administer a lump of household soda about the size of a pigeons egg, and the contents of the stomach will be emptied in about two minutes.

??? How big is a Pigeon's egg??? Is that bigger than a chicken's egg? Smaller? Household soda? You mean baking soda? How do you get them to eat that? I dunno, but the peroxide seems easy enough to administer.

Re: Help! my dog ate chocolate!

A while back I came home to find that some idiot delivery driver had delivered my prescription meds into my yard. (Had to have just thrown them over the fence. ) And of course I found chewed bottles scattered accross the yard. All I could think of was to get those stomachs empty. I didn't worry about how much peroxide to give, I didn't know how long those meds had been there so I didn't want to take time to look it up. I grabbed the peroxide, the extra turkey syringe (injector for frying with needle removed) and had hubby (he came home just in time ) hold each dog while I put two syringes worth into each dog and then basically kept administering until they had both emptied out. It probably was about 4-5 syringes each, I can't remember how much they hold. Once that was done, I went back to the bottles, counted the meds, called the vet to report what they may have ingested and monitored their vitals for the rest of the evening. Thankfully, they were uninjured. There were actually only a few pills missing, but I figured a little too much peroxide wasn't as bad as too many pills.

Re: Help! my dog ate chocolate!

OMG! I have had some STUPID delivery drivers (Threw a package over the fence into a yard with 4 dogs (Tippsy, Moose, Cassie Sharpei/Lab, & Baby RottX). All of whom would bark when anyone came up. ESPECIALLY the UPS or FED EX Guys. Tippsy hates those truck. They just drive by & she goes nuts.

That package thankfully wasn't medication, but a Throw blanket I had ordered as a gift. Needless to say the UPS people paid to get me another one shipped overnight. It also had fragile stickers all over it, so who knows what he was thinking.

I hope you contacted the delivery company about this.

Just glad that they were ok.

Please stay with the "chocolate" topic. Stupid delivery drivers is another topic.
