post spay operation question

hello, my 6 month old female rotti was spayed about 5 days ago. Im noticing that there is some fluid under her skin where the incision was made. its about the size of half a golf ball. it kinda looks like a very small water ballon is under her skin. Is this a normal part of the spay recovery? Any Help would be apprieciated thanks.

Re: post spay operation question

After my dogs TPO surgery I was alarmed to see big sacs of fluid moving from his back end up to his chest area (after about the 3rd day). He had an enormous amount of swelling.

I brought him to the vet who said it was just fluid buildup (due to the surgery) and that gravity was moving it forward. It was just beneath the skin and he told me there was nothing to worry about, it would reabsorb in a couple of days. It did and he was fine.

It did look like water balloons though!

Our pup did this after she was spayed and the vet told us that it had to to with the incision healing from the inside-out. But if your worried, you could call the vet and ask!

I'd call the vet and ask. No, I take it back..actually, I'd be more inclined to put her in the car, swing by the vet's office, and let them take a look. Just to play it safe.

Yes, when in doubt go to your vet. I'm glad I did!

Re: post spay operation question

Sounds like something that happened to us. We went to the vet and they drained it and then put a belly wrap around her abdomen. It took a little longer to heal, but in the end, everything turned out ok.

Hi Mun,

It's called a seroma...it happens often when activity is not restricted after surgery. I see a lot of them at work. Try to keep her as quiet as you can for a while, so it doesn't get any larger. It usually resolves itself after a few weeks. If it seems to be getting larger, doesn't seem to be getting any smaller or has any redness, swelling or drainage...have it looked at by your vet.
