Thumbs up Puppy With Diarrhea?

Beau has had diarrhea for a few days now but no other symptoms. He's still very energetic, eating well etc. I took him to the vet this morning as things were not clearing up. He is now on antibotics and no food for the next 24 hours. He's not dehydrated and the vet would like to see if I could get some Gatorade into him. My concern is this...the last food he had was yesterday at 4:00 p.m. and he is not to have anything until tomorrow morning and then only rice. Isn't this an extremely long time to go without food? By the way, the vet is examing a fecal sample and hopefully I will get the results later today. I'll also mention that the puppy really seems to like fruit punch Gatorade but it makes his tongue really red! Anybody else had any experience with this sort of thing (probably everybody!!). Any other suggestions?

Re: Puppy With Diarrhea?

Why did he restrict food intake to none? Was he puking too?

Seems same as when my guy got sick, same age. He wouldnt drink much of the gatorade, but I got him drinking water. When I fed him kibble, he puked that back up, so I was told to feed him some moist food in small quantities though, get some hydration back in him. He did hold the moist food down. THe antibiotics seem to started working immediately. His next poop wasn't as runny, and it just got better from there. He was as active as ever too.

I bought the "ICE" version of gatorades, clear coloured. I hate when the others turn my lips and tongue ridiculous colours.

Re: Puppy With Diarrhea?

The fast is to give an inflamed and turbulent intestinal system a chance to rest and "right" itself. As long as he is drinking enough fluids, he'll be fine without food until tomorrow. When you reintroduce food, start with small amounts 3-4 times a day and resist the temptation to feed too much, too soon. Any weight loss will resolve itself quickly once he is back on track.

Re: Puppy With Diarrhea?

You wouldn't even know that he is not feeling well if not for the diarrhea. He hasn't been throwing up just the loose stools. I feel so bad for him, he just looks at me with those big brown eyes and the mother in me wants to feed me something. I will resist! I keep telling myself that it's for his own good. Just to let you know, the fecal results came back negative for parasites but the vet said it looks like undigested bits of food in his stool. They recommended taking him off puppy food and putting him on an adult food. I told them that he has never been on puppy food and I have been feeding him Canidae since day one. The vet suggests just feeding him rice tomorrow and then seeing if things firm up.

Re: Puppy With Diarrhea?

You just look into those big brown eyes and tell him you want him to be as beautiful on the inside as he is on the outside!

If it continues, ask the vet to do another stool check. Sometimes it takes more than one for parasites to show.

Re: Puppy With Diarrhea?

Bella had a lot of diarrhea as a puppy....it was all digestion related and we had to play around with her food a bit to find something she did well on. As she matured this became way less of an issue...

As a puppy she did very well on Canidae but I imagine every puppy is different...

BTW we also fasted her a few times and she had no ill effects =)

Re: Puppy With Diarrhea?

Whenever my pup had diarrhea our vet recommended rice and a little bit of boiled chicken or hamburg (fat rinsed off).

Hope your pup feels better soon!
