Calming medicine???

Does anyone know if there is a SAFE medicine that I, not my vet, can use to calm Zeus? I would like to give him a little tooth scrub but I am afarid it will freak him out too much- and I don't want that. I don't want what I do to replace a tooth scrub at the vet- but I don't want to put him to sleep any more than I have to.... can anyone make suggestions?? THANKS!!

Natural products include Rescue Remedy (a human herb) and Anxiety (by Home-Pet...something your vet may carry or could get)...however, those are just to relieve minor stress. If you really need to tranquilze him, I think most vets are still prescribing Acepromazine...a generally safe, mild drug that should not be used if the dog has ever had any seizures. In any case, I would discuss it with your vet and see what they suggest - of course the ideal thing would be to gradually get him used to having his teeth brushed without any tranquilizers. I brush Legend's almost daily and he's fine for it.
