Re: supplement sucess??

good to know these things, that the benefits are documented. I have tried several kinds, cosequin DS and Glyco flex III helped also, but the cheaper human kinds didn't do a thing for her. But this stuff "next level" has totally rid her of any symptoms, more than anything yet. This dog was really having trouble before we started the supplements. I wonder if the next level works so well because it has vitamin c and higher doses of everything else. The 1/2 oz a day she gets gives her: 2500 mg clucosamine Sulfate, 875 mg MSM, 500 mg ascorbic acid, 1.75 mg perna mussel, 7.25 mg shark cartilage and 18.5 mg bromelain. I have read that vitamin c is good for dogs, and that it really helps canine joint health, but I've also read it is suspected of causing kidney damage in dogs. I don't know what to believe.

Re: supplement sucess??

I give my dogs Ester C seperately, because I've found that most supplements don't contain enough of it. I also give MSM seperately.

They get Cosequin DS, 1000mg MDM / day, 1000mg Ester C with bioflavinoids dailiy, Salmon oil and occaisionally DMG 125mg.

Re: supplement sucess??

Debbie,
Sometimes the cheaper human stuff doesn't work, one, because it isn't as good, and two, because it may be a coated capsule, and the dog's digestive system is different than a human's, and if you don't crush the capsule...well, without being indelicate, itwill just pass through their system and they aren't getting any supplement at all.
You can find a comparison of supplements that was done, if you search on the web.

Re: supplement sucess??

the cheaper human stuff dosen't work on me either! I have researched supplements on line, and there is, to put it mildly, a lot of information and opinions and options. the vet started her on cosequin DS but it was quite pricy. then we went to human stuff, both cheap then expensive, but on that, she begin to be limpy again. then the glycoflex 3 I ordered online arrived and she improved again while taking that. We ran out of that on vacation and found this liquid at a petsmart with equine section. (we don't have a equine petsmart near us.) It is, so far, the most economical I've found. It is about $30.00 for 32 oz--that's 64 doses. I'm glad vit. c is ok.

one interesting thing, that elbow soreness never completely went away even with crate rest. Since we started this stuff, she has had no more problem with that elbow or shoulder area.

thanks everyone, for the info and input!

Re: supplement sucess??

Okay so what do we look for in a supplement or could you reccommend some good ones to start a puppy off at. He is 3 months old and growing big time.

Re: supplement sucess??

You can do a search in the boards for supplements...people have success with different ones.
I use the Cosequin DS because it's got studies to back it up, and my Tank has had hip surgery to correct one dysplastic hip, but the other couldn't be corrected, and it was recommended by his surgeon. He gave me other choices too, but this one is easy, it comes in chewable tablets that he likes. And since he gets 2 in the morning and two at night, makes my life easy. I buy it on eBay so it's much cheaper than at the vet or other on line sources. He also gets fish oil capsules, and like Boston Rott, ester C. Right now, I'm giving Jake, the growing puppy one tablet a day.

Re: supplement sucess??

ebay! I didn't know you could buy cosequin there! Also if you are giving 4 tablets a day, that dose would be a lot more comprable to the dose of next level I'm giving Hilda, and would probably work great. I know it is supposed to be one of the most easily absorbed formula.

Re: supplement sucess??

A friend just told me about getting Cosequin DS on Ebay for between $50 and $65/bottle. Just be sure to ask about expiration dates when ordering.
