Talking Heart Murmur

Just took Vegas in last night for his rabies, and final booster, and the vet found him with a heart murmur. She said it isn't major, and that he most likely will grow out of it. I was just wondering what any of you know about this? At what age if he doesn't grow out of it, will they do anything? Is this genetic?

Re: Heart Murmur

After 12 months of age should determine whether it is an innocent juvenile murmur or something more.

Re: Heart Murmur

I did a search on here, found a bit of info. I'm not too concerned, but very glad I switched vets. I had a bad feeling about the last one I went to, and he didn't detect the murmur, actually I don't remember him even listening to his heart at all! My vet wants to talk to my breeder's vet, and I will call him to let him know about the murmur.

Re: Heart Murmur

Rottweilers are prone to SAS sub aortic stenosis. If you do a search here for that you should find LOTS of info.

If you click on my www page and then click on Darla fund you will find more info

http://www.rottweilerhealth.org has info as well

My question is what did they grade your heart murmur? Sometimes they don't grow out of it and did she give you any ideas what you can do to check into further treatment?

It seems like you follow this pretty close. Can you keep me updated as to when Dr. Kathryn Meurs does her SAS seminar in Columbus OH? If the murmur doesn't go away in a few months, I would consider him for the study.

Level 2. I don't think she wanted me to get overly concerned just yet. She did ask me if I knew if my breeder had the Dam and Sire cleared of heart problems, I wasn't sure, and I couldn't find my sales agreement yesterday. I remember the obvious, OFA, and temprament tests. I'm pretty sure there was something about heart stuff. The Vet didn't specify any treatments, but asked me to get the vets name off my breeder so she can ask him if he had detected anything when they had the pups checked before going to homes. My friends mom works at the University of Guelph, who in turn have the Veterinary College as part of it. I will ask her to look into the cost (through her) for doing the ultrasound for him.

Re: Heart Murmur

Close? Yup I do. I lost an entire litter to cardiac and lost Darla at 14 months as well, hence the Darla fund and my push for this research. Thank God for carol krickenburg for her help is getting this study off the ground.

I believe the seminar Dr Meurs did was at the National in May. If your pup is diagnosed by a cardiologist with SAS, the study just wants a pedigree and a copy of the diagnostic from the cardiologist

To check if your pups parents had their hearts certified you can check the OFA database http://www.offa.org . Most of the time they will have certifications listed. For an example of what that looks like do a search for dogs whose names start with Frontier and you'll see some of my breeding. Bea is listed as well but Frontier is not the beginning of her name so she won't show up with the search I just described

Personally I would have your pup's heart at least listened to by a cardiologist at 6 months old. That will give you a good idea if it is an innocent juvenile murmur or not
