Is this mange?

I was just brushing Bear and noticed a huge scabby thing on his back near his spine and midway down his back.
I have never seen mange and not sure if that is what this is
I barely tugged on it and his hair came out to reveal a red sore underneath. Mind you, he has lymphoma (and on prednisone) and his immunity in knocked down considerable. I got the creepy crawlies just thinking its mange. I can't tell from the websites if this is what he has.
I have pics, but I can't figure out how to post them here.

Re: Is this mange?

Is it roundish? My first guess is a hot spot.

Re: Is this mange?

What are you feeding him? Hotspots can be an allergic response to something in the dog's diet.

Re: Is this mange?

A hot spot is an infection. Sometimes starts with a scratch or bug bite that becomes irritated or infected. I've never had one on my dogs, but I know they are not uncommon and I'll bet you'll get lots of different remedies. I understand a listerine spray is excellent. You might need to clip the hair back so you can medicate it properly.

Mange rarely attacks adults, usually pups and starts around the eye or muzzle.

He's been eating so much different stuff lately since we have been spoiling him rotten. It started last night and he had a normal dinner, his dry food, mixed with canned and a soupy canned food. OH and he had some meatloaf.
I just did a search and found some treatments that we will try right now.
It doesn't seem to bother him, I haven't seen him itch at it, and its not in an easy to itch spot.

Re: Is this mange?

Our foster boy recently got a hot spot on his head; I immediately switched his food.

I took a pair of scissors and cut away the surrounding hair. Foster Boy did scratch his head to the degree I finally put an Elizabethan collar on him so he'd leave his head alone. Hot spots itch, so don't be surprised if your boy tries scratching his.

Re: Is this mange?

Our poms used to get them in the summer. Then it was usually because of moisture caught up in their thick undercoat. Or so the thinking in the '70's.

Re: Is this mange?

Our FB gets hotspots on occasion and Listerine, as Judi said, does the trick.

Re: Is this mange?

I would be very conservative about thinking about changing the food on a dog that is fragile because of the appearance of a single hot spot.

I don't plan on changing his regular food, maybe not the same snacks though.
We are treating the hot spot.

Does it matter what kind of listerine? Might be a silly question, but we had a minty one. Will that work or does it need to be Original?

Re: Is this mange?

Whatever you have on hand will work fine, we have used minty as well as the regular. And there are no silly questions here! Well maybe the ones that are not asked!;-)

Definately get the original and dab it on with a 4x4 or cotton ball, keep the area as clean and dry as you can and you may have to cut away hair to see exactly where it is and how big an area you need to treat. Hope this helps.

Good advice--my foster is healthy.

When he had his hot spot, I used Listerine faithfully. For me, it didn't help. What helped was putting on the collar so he couldn't scratch his head.
