i don't know if it's ok for dogs but i use skin so soft for maverick as well. he doesn't really lick himself so i figured it would be ok. so far, we haven't had any problems.

Sprinkle garlic powder on her food. (I think I read that somewhere on here.) Correct me if I'm wrong.

Re: What does everyone use for mosquitoes?

We use a bit of Skin So Soft for Julius as well. I just rub a bit in my hands & rub Julius down with it. It seems to work really well.

Re: What does everyone use for mosquitoes?

Can I use any of the mentioned above (skin so soft/garlic?) on/for my 7 week old pup? Or should I wait til hes older...Ive too noticed that they love doggies for some reason, and well love me too, I cant stand the little critters.

There are products designed especially for dogs and if you have any questions, I would suggest you use something like that. You can call your vet and ask what would be appropriate. I believe I would be most inclined to use a dog product.

Re: What does everyone use for mosquitoes?

There is an all natural product (and I own it but can't FIND it anywhere!) that I bought at Christmas Tree Shops of all places for $2 (but have since seen it at local pharmacies and grocery stores for about $5). Anyways - it is safe for pets and people - all natural, DEET free, uses marigold extract & peppermint and other oils to repel skeeters and no-see-ums and other irritating winged critters.

It smells much better than any insect repellant I've used, and it works really well. I think it has an SPF of 8 as well. If I find it I'll post the name...

Re: What does everyone use for mosquitoes?

i did a little research and while products containing DEET are the best defense against west nile/mosquitoes for humans, both the FDA and AVMA say to not use such products on dogs/animals. of course, both sites said to contact your vet to find out what you can use.

in the last reader's digest, there was an article about west nile/mosquitos and skin so soft was rated one of the worst insect repellants. i think it said it's effects only lasted 25 minutes. i thought that was rather interesting because we use it all the time and it seems to work rather well. my husband said he and his fellow marine's used it all the time when they were out in the field to keep from getting attacked by the sand fleas.

Re: What does everyone use for mosquitoes?

I FOUND IT!!!! Took me long enough but it was right where I thought it was - in the back of the Jeep along with other doggie supplies!

The repellant is called "bug AWAY! lymonesse". Contains Citronella oil, geranium oil, rosemary oil and peppermint oil as active ingredients. My bad - no SPF qualities!

Says you should re-apply every 2-3 hours and safely repels all mosquitoes including 'Culex Pipiens' and Aedes Aegypti' as well as these guys: gnats, black flies, fleas, wasps, ticks and many others. 100% DEET free.

I went for a walk tonight (about 7:30pm in the East isn't really a good walking time unless you want to swat at bugs) and applied this to both myself and Ben before we started out. I didn't have any problems with bugs and didn't see anything trying to land on Ben while we walked either (or while we rested).

Like I said, it's available at Christmas Tree Shops for $1.99, but I've also seen it at a few grocery stores and pharmacies for about $3 for a 4 ounce bottle.

Re: What does everyone use for mosquitoes?

Make your own.

Remember this is in addition to your Frontline, Preventatic, Heatworm med....

Take a BIG fat lemon (the more rind the better) and slice it paper thin. Put in a bowl with a tablespoon of crushed rosemary leaves (or a 6 inch sprig of fresh). Pour a quart of hot, near boiling water over the lemon / rosemary mix. Let steep overnight. Strain and put into a large spray bottle. Keep in the refrigerator. Shake well before using. The lemon in this spray with the rosemary oil will give your dog a beautiful shiny coat and will keep fleas, ticks, and other bugs away… including mosquitoes, so you get extra heartworm protection. If your dog has dry skin or allergies add a teaspoon of tree oil and a tablespoon of Aloe pulp. I spray the dogs every evening when we are out.

This has worked wonders on dogs and also works great on people who hike and walk in the woods. No bug will get near this stuff, and of course it’s all natural.

THANKS! I actually am growing a rosemary (bush?), so that'll be easy. I don't use anything either for fleas. He's on Revolution, and anything else I'd use to help would be natural. THey are already exposed to lots of chemicals/drugs.
