Joint Supplements and the younger dog

I am trying to decide if I should put Sajan back on a joint supplement as support and a preventative and whic one to use. He was on Glyco-flex for about a year after his shoulder surgery as a precaution. I stopped giving it to him when we were trying to fix h is skin issues and I was told it was a high allergan for dogs.

So, who here gives their young actively competing/training dog joint supplements, why and what do you use and in what amount????

Thanks!

Re: Joint Supplements and the younger dog

I gave Rocco glycosamine/chondroitin/MSM for the first 18 months along with Ester-C for his major growth phase. Since he's not doing any hard work such as agility/jumping I stopped them and plan to start up again when he gets older (and start Perle on them in a couple more years). He and Perle both continue on Ester-C 1000mg daily at this point. My breeder recommended the supplements and said she keeps her working dogs on them all the time.

Re: Joint Supplements and the younger dog

I have my 4.5 year old on Glyco-Flex II as a prophylactic. She does not have any joint problems, but I hope to keep her comfortable and extend her career as long as possible.

Re: Joint Supplements and the younger dog

Henry the hyperweiler has been on SynoviG3 since three months of age .
He's now 18 mths . We're into agility and will compete when he's learnt more obstacles . He's always in turbo speed mode

SynoviG3 info here

It also has omega 3 fatty acids and antioxidents in it .
He really likes the supplement and would eat the whole tub if I left it down .

Re: Joint Supplements and the younger dog

As my litters are weaned, they get Ester C powder (500mg/day) and ground-up Cosamin DS in their puppy mush. I recommend joint supplements to the owners, but if they don't want to use them, that's fine too.

My guys all get joint supplements, and Vit C starts the day they arrive at my house. They run hard, don't follow the normal "no no's" regarding joints, and so far, everyone has passed hips and elbows.

Bort: almost 8.5yrs OFA Ex / Elbows clear
1000mg/day (split as 500mg bid) EsterC with bioflavinoids powder (Vitamin Shoppe brand)
Cosamin DS 2 per day

Froli: was 6yrs 2 months OFA Good / Elbows clear
same as Bort

The Grrls (Vikka 22mths, Banja 15mths):
1000mg Ester C with bioflavinoids / day
Cosamin DS 2 per day (3 during competition weekends)
1000mg MSM / day (Vitamin Shoppe brand powder)
125mg DMG (dimethyl glycine) / day during hard training or competition

Devon (our previous girl, was 6 when she was rehomed): OFA Good / Elbows clear
1000mg Vit C / day
Glycoflex (old formula)

DMG is something that helps boost the immune system, and also helps with muscle recovery.

Re: Joint Supplements and the younger dog

I started using Syn-Flex when my Faust started showing signs of joint problems at the age of 5 and had very good results. At the same time I was also using it as a preventitive for Bru starting at the age of about 7, he is currently 10 and has no visable signs of joint problems.

For those interested in DMG, here is more info on it:
http://www.naturalopinion.com/nmp/nmp4/DMG.htm

Here is an opposing opinion:
http://www.gettingwell.com/drug_info...dim_0097.shtml

I feel that it helps the girls rejuvenate and I know many others who swear by it.

Re: Joint Supplements and the younger dog

Thanks everyone! I already give Sajan 1000mg Ester C and I had some Glyco-flex left over, so I started him back on them until they are gone. Then I think I am going BostonRott's route. Looks like a successful plan to me :)
