Deramaxx questions

Saga is temporarily on Deramaxx. Is anyone here familiar with this drug and things I should be watching out for. I'm starting to do some internet searching now, but thought I'd ask all you experts out there.
The good news is she didn't tear her ACL, the bad news is there's something going on with one of the bones. The radiologist is supposed to look at her X-rays tomorrow and she may have more X-rays to see if we can figure it out. So keep your fingers crossed it isn't really bad news.

Re: Deramaxx questions

Here's a site with some info about Deramaxx.
http://home.insightbb.com/~e.murray/index.html

When Osa came to live with me she had been on Deramaxx for arthritis pain. I put her on Glyco Flex III and was able to get her completely off the Deramaxx. She hasn't had any since Sept. We didn't notice any obvious problems associated with the Deramaxx, but she acts like a pup these days and she is doing fantastic.

I personally wouldn't use it any longer than absolutely necessary.

Re: Deramaxx questions

I originally refused anything heavier than ascriptin to help Saga out, but she was still in pain. So until we figure out what's going on, tomorrow she has more X-rays and tests, I'm giving it to her in half doses to keep her comfortable. Thanks for the site!

Re: Deramaxx questions

Like all nsaids, use caution. My old Delilah took it for the last 6 or so months of her life, and did great with it. My old Homer had weak kidneys and couldn't take it. Just be aware. If your dog isn't going to tolerate it, you'll know in just a day or so.

Re: Deramaxx questions

Brodie just got off of Deramaxx. He was on it for almost 3 weeks due to a shoulder injury. He was also on it for a few weeks last summer when we found out he had hip dysplasia. The only problems he's had with the Dermaxx is tummy issues. We discovered that we can not give him the Deramaxx at the same time that we give him his gluco/chondro suppliment. He gets sick and vomits.

Re: Deramaxx questions

My female has been on Deramaxx since November and doing very well on it. We have had no side effects to date. You need to give it with food and only once a day. Reba has severe arthritis and Deramaxx has made her feel like a pup! She also gets glucosimine/chondrotin/MSM daily without any problems. Now I do take her in for bloodwork, I want to make sure her liver is doing fine. I rather have her on Deramaxx then Rymadel (sp) for long term.

Since Reba will have to be on some sort of pain management the rest of her life (she's 8 years old) I'm considering putting her on Adequan and more then likely will be doing that in the near future. Adequan is the Cadillac of the three pain meds in my opinion.

The beauty of Adequan is that it is not a pain medication, but relieves pain by improving the integrity of the joint by replenishing joint fluid and inhibiting cartilage damage. It actually treats the disease. Pain medications mask the pain and can encourage activity that causes further damage.

Adequan only works for joints, though, and may not be an option for Saga depending on what the problem is found to be. Sometimes those NSAIDS are the best choice there is, and with awareness and monitoring, the risks can be managed.
