Re: Didn't realize Hip replacement cost $$$$$$

I'm going to stick my neck waaay out here. I am certainly NOT trying to second guess anyone's decisions. I love my girl more than anything. I really do. I'm going to do everything I can to see she has as long a life and as good a life as I can. I have an old shar pei that has bad hips and bad elbows and knees. he has had a good life and still has a cheerful outlook. I think I can give Hilda a pretty good, and I hope long, life by taking good care of her. but having lost 2 dogs to cancer (in spite of expensive chemo) and one to a freak accident of getting run over, and one to old age at 13, I realize that quality of life is the important thing, because, at best, they don't live as long as we would like. A major surgery is very hard on a dog. And very hard on it's family. I've done it 3 times, results were not what we hoped, and I don't think I'd do it again, even if money were no object. So I'll love my girl, do everything I can to give her as long and as happy a life as possible, and when it's time, it will kill me, but I'll let her go. (teary as I write)

Re: Didn't realize Hip replacement cost $$$$$$

I hope all goes well with your Moka.

My porsha will eventually have her hips operated on. Right now, I am looking into alternative medicine for her (acupucture). I heard it works. I'll be traveling to a place in New York State. I live in PA. There is nothing that I wouldn't do for my dog. We are not crazy. We love our Rotties. Someone mentioned the money that we spend. I've already spent $10,000 on her with three operations and it's not over.

Good luck to you and your Moka!!!

Dogs live in the physical world of today. Respect and concern for the dog's dignity and quality of life should always be primary. That is not only good animal husbandry, but the truest way to show love.

Anyone contemplating extreme surgery, should thoroughly examine the process and the outcome with the dog's interest at heart.

Money should never be the concern unless it's more than you can humaly can afford. Not 1 person mention or touch on the subject of maybe this is more than 1 can afford. Can you purchase a dog and can give him/ he r the proper care ? yes Can you also run in bad times where you don't have the money like that to cover those cost ? yes please is there other options to help the average loving pet owner out with big fees such as these?

Re: Didn't realize Hip replacement cost $$$$$$

Thank You everyone for the replies. Let me say I am single with no children so I will be able to afford this procedure. I tried accupuncture with no good results. The accupuncture theropist told me to go ahead with surgery. I really only have 2 options now. Put Moka to sleep or have the surgery. I guess the way I see things is that she is only 1 years old and has many more years ahead of her and I have talked to many people who have had this surgery done and it was a complete turn around for them. Moka is not active at all. She sleeps alot cause of the pain she is in. I can't stand to watch her suffer like this any longer. Her hips are so severe that the vets told me in a couple more months that her hips will get so bad she will be unable to get up anymore. And I can say I have seen the X-rays from Febuary and May and there is a drastic difference. I wish I could show everyone them so you could see what I am faced with. Since I will never have children this to me is like a child and I would do the same thing for my cat if it ever came down to it. Children cost alot more then an animal does. If you look at delivery alone for a child is almost $10,000. So I guess to me it will be worth it. I want her to be able to run and play like other dogs do and not just go for a 15 minute walk 2xs a day and then sleep all day. What kind of life is that for a dog.

Thanks,
