Re: Excessive Eye Goop

Best thing would be to have the vet check it out.

Yes, you should go have the vet check that out. I know once a week I wash out my dog's eyes just because like us they get a lot of minute particles in them that can cause lot's of infections. Good luck and lt us know what the vet thinks

Re: Excessive Eye Goop

My pup had yellow/green eye goo at first. I took him to the vet, green is not good, and he gave me some ointment, cleared it up within a day or two.

Re: Excessive Eye Goop

Julius had some excessive eye goop for awhile there when he was a puppy. We went to the vet & it was a slight case of conjuntivitis. We got drops & it cleared right up.

It's worth a vet visit. Let us know what the vet says.

Re: Excessive Eye Goop

We experienced excessive eye discharge (with a Rott) in on eye at about 8 months of age and the vet perscribed an ointment for the eye. Applied 2X per day, it cleared up in 2 days.

Post Re: Excessive Eye Goop

Hope your pup has been to the vet already and his eye problems are under control. It is not normal for a healthy pup to have discharge from the eyes. There is a possiblity also that the pup my have entropian or ectropian eyes...if this is the case then surgery will be required.

Re: Excessive Eye Goop

I havent been yet. I have an appointment though. And I called the breeder and she said its his change in diet and stress. I am not sure that i said it was yellow/green sometimes. I feel like I am usurpping (sp) her authority. I know thats totally stupid but I do. Whats entropian eyes? or ectropian eyes? the vet said they needed to do a stain to see if they are scratched? not sure. I will ask when we go in.

Re: Excessive Eye Goop

Hes not messing with them at all. They dont seem to be bothering him and I never remember seeing any of the puppies with eye boogers any of the times we had visitation. Do they rub them if they hurt?

Julius didn't rub his eyes when he had conjunctivitis. He just had a lot of eye goop & his eyes were a bit red.

Julius did have to have a stain done on his eye one time when he was squinting. It's actually a pretty cool procedure. They put this neon yellow/green dye in the dogs eye to look for scrapes or scratches. Then the neon seeps out of the eye & then out of the nose. FREAKY!!!

Entropion is a condition where the dog's eyelids turn inward toward the eyeball rather than outward as they should. This causes irritation to the eye and if left untreated, can lead to blindness. Entropion is usually inherited but can also be acquired later in life as a result of eye injury or infection. Entropion isn't always apparent in young puppies. When you're shopping for a puppy, you should expect to see, clear, dry sparkling eyes on the parents of the litter. Runny, inflamed eyes or crusty eyelids are not normal and should be treated by a veterinarian.

Ectropion is a defect of conformation in which there is a sagging or rolling-out (eversion) of the eyelids. This results in abnormal exposure of the eye, which often leads to irritation.

Hope that helps!

Re: Excessive Eye Goop

Thanks, I just did a search and saw that your Jules had the same issue. I feel like a negligent parent here. Its been making me crazy. If my kids had this stuff coming out of their eyes I would have had their butts in the dr asap. I know to listen to my gut. I just looked at him again. His eye whites are white. he has another thing that covers his eye, must be the 3rd eyelid? thats red, but he was sleeping and i woke him up. Anyway, he goes in thursday at this point but I think I will go home early tomorrow and get him checked then. I asked the vet and they said to make an appt.
I never saw any eye booger, runny eye things in any of the breeders dogs and hes my 2nd rottie and OSO had eye boogers, normal cloudy boogers that you wiped away and they were gone. And when we got him he was fine so my breeders thought that it was a diet change and stress level thing made sense. But its not going away. poor baby. He could care less though. I am taking him tomorrow.

Julius still gets eye boogers every once in awhile but they are nothing compared to what Julius had when he had conjunctivitis.

Really, just listen to your gut. I never liked messing around with the eyes or waiting. We always went in. I've had things lodged in my eyes & had to go to the ER & it's so painful. So I can imagine it can be for them as well.

Glad to hear that he's going into the vet.

Let us know what the vet says.

Re: Excessive Eye Goop

i just talked to the breeder too and I hadn't told her they were yellow/green. Not sure how I did that, but she said to take him. Which I was doing anyway. One of my co-workers dogs has had the surgery for the inturned eyelids so I had him look at Deuce and he said they are fine. I will still ask the vet but I feel less stressed now. Thanks, I will let you after his appointment.

Re: Excessive Eye Goop

Ok, back from the vet and its an infection. But I think I am changing vets. My breeder treated him for worms but I need more doses. She told me not to treat him with the worming stuff until hes done with the eye antibiotics. His immune systems compromised already, with the stress of us getting him etc etc and she says to wait. Ok, fine. I have no problem with that. Well, my vet sure did. She tried to give him a dose and I asked what it was and she told me it was the worm medicine and I tell her I was instructed to wait and she went into a tirade about how it was against the law for my breeder to treat someones dog and I told her she wasnt treating my dog I was and she continued on and on. Not sure if this was about me not getting his shots there or what but she was mad.I let her go on and on but I did what my breeder asked me to do. She also doesnt want us to give the worm stuff too close to the shots. Not sure why, maybe its hard on their little systems but .... I dont think I like this vet. May have to find one not so threatened. She made the comment that "breeders do this stuff all the time". All I want is for my puppy to be well. I figure my breeder knows him better than a vet thats seen him for 3 minutes. Anyone else ever have that happen?
