Talking What is a good tick bite after treatment?

We've poisoned the yard and surrounding yards medicated the dogs yet the ticks are extremely bad here in New Mexico.

While they will die after they bite we still have to check the dogs daily.

Is there a good after treatment to treat the area to prevent itching and bite area from becoming inflamed.

Simple and you probably have in your medicine cabinet..rubbing alcohol, peroxide, or Listerine. just dab on the effected area. You'll see a scab in a few days.

Strong salt water is excellent for most wounds

Re: What is a good tick bite after treatment?

I pulled 3 ticks off him again last night they seem to love the male he has been treated with Frontline tried Advantage and they still love him.

The problem is when we pull the ticks they are leaving wounds and he looses skin and hair around some of the bites.

The other two dogs the tick frontline is working well on I check them daily and the ticks are walking off them not biting.

I washed the area where the 3 ticks were attached and got a quarter size clump of fur and a highly irritated red bleeding area which we are treating twice daily with the vet cream.

These ticks were not on him in the morning we spend over an hour combing him out with a fine tooth tick comb and going against his fur it has gotten to the point he just sits down in front of me and tries to show me were he is bit.

The cream the vet gave me keeps these areas moist and they don't heal as fast so I will try the peroxide and let you know.

Re: What is a good tick bite after treatment?

Down here in Florida it seems that Frontline isn't doing the trick. In fact my vet told me that people are returning it to him because it's useless. Try a tick collar from your vet. They seem to help and also switch to Advantics. That seems to be working down here. Also, remember ticks go high. Spraying the grass will do no good. Treat your fence and brush and trees. Don't forget your own home! Ticks love hiding behind pictures and drapes. Use a "fogger" not a mist. I hate the thought of using chemicals to kill these pests, but to get them under control, one must do what they have to do.

Has your dog been vaccinated for Lymes? If not, please do so. Good luck. Tis the season for ticks!

Re: What is a good tick bite after treatment?

Consider two things:

Preventic collars for prevention. They are proven in clinical studies to be more effective than topicals. They kill the ticks faster and prevent transmission of tick-bourne disease. Ticks up here this year are VERY bad, and started early. All the dogs have collars this year (first time) and not ONE tick has been found on anyone.

For homeopathic remedies, you can consider ledum, given after any insect bite.

I'd also take your dogs to the vet in about 14 weeks, and ask for a FULL TICK PANEL (not the quick snap test) and be sure that they're ok. Tick bourne disease is insidious, and often few symptoms until a lot of damage has been done.

We've used the Preventic collar for the first year also with Jules. We're usually hiking with him 3-4 times a week & I have gone over him with a fine-tooth comb (literally!) & haven't found any ticks on him!

Yes, tick bourne disease is insidious. It hit Jules like a Mack Truck. The panel cost us around $110 but it was well worth it & something I wish I would have done sooner. It's not something fun to deal with.

Re: What is a good tick bite after treatment?

Are you using Fontline or Frontline Plus? Plus is the tick control. Advantage or Advantix? I made the mistake of thinking Advantage was a tick control, it's not.

Re: What is a good tick bite after treatment?

We are using frontline plus it seems to be working on the other two yet not on him.

He had such a bad reaction to a tick bite last year, bled out severely through the nose. So we even poisoned the neighbors yards on both sides.

I was sitting outside with him combing and checking and a breeze came along and I swear I kid you not 2 ticks blew out of the tree onto him from the neighbors yard.

The wound is finally scabbing over thanks to the remedies here. I'll get him a collar and a visit to the vet again for testing poor guy.

We dipped him which he loved and sprayed him and medicated him, I just can't believe how fierce these bugs are.
