Growth on chin, under lip

Hi:

Im not sure what I just found on Zeiss. It's some kind of an outgrowth, hard, black and pink, mostly round, just smaller than a dime, then it spreads out. Its on the bottom of his chin, just under his lip. I have a vet appointment set for tomorrow to check it out. Zeiss is young 8mo old. I believe rottie's skin is all pink except the lips and inside the mouth, so I dont like that black pigment. Im hoping this is a pimple or something of that nature. I guess I would just like to ask if anyone has a rottie with pimples/irritations, maybe due to allergies? I hope this is what im looking at. I know the DR. will need to take a sample to know for sure. I guess Im more worried than anything, I'm kinda sensitive to the whole cancer issue.

Re: Growth on chin, under lip

Link had something like that around that age and we had the trainer take a look (she is a Rotti expert!). She thought it looked like an irritation possibly from him rubbing on his crate. She suggested using an all natural cream that is nontoxic and see if that cleared it up. Luckily, my bf's mom manages a bath and body shop and got us a great cream and that took care of it. It sounds exactly like what your pup has. Hope this helps! Sorry, I can't remember what the stuff was called but I am sure your vet will have something.

Re: Growth on chin, under lip

Could it be a wart??

Zeiss' age makes me ask--oral papillomas are painless warts that grow on the lips and in the mouths of dogs younger than 2 yo. They are caused by the canine oral papilloma virus. Initially, papillomas are small and pink. Over 4-6 weeks they increase in size and assume a rough, grayish-white, cauliflowerlike appearance.

They usually disappear spontaneously in 6-12 weeks. If they fail to do so, they can be removed by surgery, freezing, or electrocautery. The dog's immune system makes antibodies the prevent reinfection.

(This is from Dog Owner's Home Veterinary Handbook by James M. Giffin and Liisa D. Carlson. I'm sure there are also other books of this type available, but I've never regreted having this book in my library.)

Re: Growth on chin, under lip

A friends Rottie had warts in and around his mouth when he was about 3 yrs old. The vet froze them off. It took about 3 visits as there were so many of them. They never came back.
Good luck with the vet tomorrow!

Re: Growth on chin, under lip

I just took another look at him tonight. The area is very red and swollen, it has no black on it now. I think I was looking at dirt earlier. The area is now much larger now at least the size of a nickel, looks to me like it might be puss filled. Sorry that's gross. I'm sure the vet will have some kind of answer. I just got scared. He probably got a cut, and has an infection or something. He gets his nose into everything, digging around the yard, pulling up moles etc.

It sounds much more involved than what Link had, I think a vet visit is the best idea. Let us know what the heck it is!

Re: Growth on chin, under lip

Harley had some of those around his mouth, on his front paw and a few on the back paws about month ago. they too were black with pink around it. Come to find out they were sores from playing rough with our GSD and a friend of mines dog. I just added some vit E alternating with Flax seed oil on his food two to three times a week and they healed very nicely. We are still waiting for ALL the hair to grow back. Most of it has there are just a few small spots that have not yet.

Re: Growth on chin, under lip

Zeiss had his appointment yesterday. He is now on antibiotics. He has "doggie pimples" but the infection is deeper than a regular pimple. There was a word for it, I can say it but have no idea how to spell it, but it sounded like Frumpulosis. So I just have to keep the area clean, and put some corticosterioids (sp?) on it twice daily. After closer examination, the dark spots were scabs formed from dried blood.

Glad to hear that you got everything taken care of & that Zeiss is on the road to recovery!

Re: Growth on chin, under lip

yup, puberty has set in,I got mine metal bowls at walmart, very in- expensive,in cooking Isle, costs more in dog stuff, my vet said to use Acne pads, whichever brand you like, hey they work,I broke a few of them, full of puss and blood, serum and blood to relieve the pressure, but don't if you don't want to.might get infected, just use acne cream or the pads word well,Baron was worse and being a boy much easier to care for than my Fussy Leah, she doesn't want anything done....anyway I'm glad now you know and don't have to worry,I also kept a clean washcloth handy and washed the food that gets into the folds our before using tyhe pads, they healed and never came back as with the metal bowls it wasn;t rough and the food is easier to eat and they don't have to drag their chins on the rough surface, mine still look good...
