Talking Should she be spayed?

2 months ago i got a nine month old female rotty from a rescue centre. She is now 11 months and has not had a season. Our vet said that there should be no problems if she is spayed without having a season but i am still a bit worried about going ahead with it because there are quite a few problems considered with bitches being spayed before their first season.
I was wondering what other peoples veiws are on this subject.
Thanks in advance, Holly242.

Re: Should she be spayed?

I'm curious too. My vet recommended my female be spayed before her first season because there would be less chance of any problems later on.

Re: Should she be spayed?

bitches spayed before their first heat cycle have next to zero chance of getting breast cancer later in life. Once they've gone through a cycle this benefit decreases dramatically

Why would anyone recommend a bitch go through a cycle first?

Re: Should she be spayed?

there is an increased likelihood of incontinence in females if they are spayed too young

Re: Should she be spayed?

I remember seeing a post that said spay incontinence was less frequent in females spayed after one heat cycle. Can anyone clarify?

LOL- it must have been babyblue! So, is this a documented fact or simply opinion?

Re: Should she be spayed?

well, if it's a fact......between you and me.......this is just my OPINION.........I'd RATHER treat incontinence than cancer! *shrugging shoulders* but HEY, that's just me.

Re: Should she be spayed?

Wow, you guys are fast! That's what I was remembering, and is the only reason I can think of to wait one cycle before spaying. That is assuming the dog is not accessible to intact males...

Fair enough...so what are the statistics on cancer for dogs who have gone through one heat cycle?

Wow, I'm shocked that you got her from a rescue centre and she wasn't spayed before you got her! ALL of my foster dogs are spayed/neutered BEFORE they go to their new homes...I thought that was a general practice with all rescues.

That may be a standard procedure in the US, but may not be in England.
