X Rays

Are Vet Will Not Give Us Zeus' X Rays Has Anyone Had This Happen. Zeus Passed Away 1 Month Ago And Nathan And I Want All Of His X-rays And Charts. They Said They Would Give Us His Charts But Not The X-rays. I Think Their Scared Because His X-rays Show Everything. They Also Said They Could Give Them To Another Vet If They Needed Them But, Zeus' Is Gone So No One Needs Them Except Us. Advice Would Be Great

Re: X Rays

In Canada the law states the vets must hold onto the x-rays for 10 years wether the dog has passed on or not. They will hand the x-rays over to your new vet though. The reason I know this is because I changed vets and the old vet wouldn't give me the x-rays. All the other info fine....but not the x-rays.

Re: X Rays

In most places the vets own the xrays. They can and will deliver them to another physician, who must then return them to the dr. who originally took them. They must also keep records, but they can and will copy them and give you a set. Xrays cannot be copied which is why they don't just hand them over.

Re: X Rays

This article is regarding horses, but I would imagine the same would apply for any animal x-rays.

Re: X Rays

none of the 3 vets I frequent have ever given me any trouble about taking xrays. They hate to store them :)

This is what happened when we had a specialist look at Julius' x-rays when he was limping (before we found out it was Lyme). We volunteered to take the x-rays to the specialist but they said their procedure was to send them over themselves. They didn't want them possibly lost somehow. Like someone else said, they have to be on file for a certain number of years.

the thing that makes me upset is nathans dad is a vet and a MD. and they said they could send them to another vet but not his dad. SOUNDS FUNNY TO ME.

Re: X Rays

Hmmmm, interesting. When Chivas was dx'd with osteosarcoma, her regular vet gave me her xrays to bring to her holistic vet. The holistic vet kept them.
When we took her to the ER vet when she busted her ACL, the ER vet made copies so I could take them to my regular vet.
Ive never had a problem getting xrays and even as I write this I have a copy of MY MRI sitting right next to desk.
Not sure what to think.

doctors/vets/dentist will never give the individual there xrays and if they do let you carry them somewhere thwey alway make you sign and bring them back , by them stating they would give them to another vet why would you think they were hiding something.... and like you said zues is gone so no one needs them..... and you dont need them.. my advice would be let it drop and not to look for a place to lay blame for your dogs passing..

I would agree, and I don't think anyone is trying to lay blame, however, letting things go, when there is a very good chance of neglect is something I won't "drop". Besides, an expert, who had a chance to see the X-Rays, believed that there was something "obvious". His passing was also important enough to us and UC Davis, that we had a complete Necropsy performed. Everyone is trying to "LEARN" from this.

We would hate to have a similar thing happen to anyone's animal. Not to mention, this is only the 3rd documented case of a Gastric Torsion of this type in the History of UC Davis Animal Clinic. Would you want to take any of your animals to the "best, and only 'emergency service'" in your area if they did not give your animals the best possible care and treatment?
