Back again

Finally back from the Windy City. Picked my boys up this morning from the vet/kennel where they were neutered while I was gone. I can see that life with the elizabethan collars is going to be a challenge for them as well as me. I did get my paperwork for training off before I left so now I'm just waiting for confirmation of the first class.

All that said, if the first class is before their collars are due to come off, should I wait or take them anyway?

Re: Back again

Use the bite not collar or make one instead of the elizabethian ones. They work beautifully for keeping the dog from getting to it's rear.

And you don't need protection from biting when you have collar and leash on and are working with them.

Re: Back again

How long are you supposed to leave the collar on? Is the purpose of the collar to keep them from getting at the neuter incision?

Re: Back again

The collar is supposed to stay on until next Monday morning. I've not heard of a "bite not" collar nor have any idea how to make one. Can you elaborate?

Re: Back again

It looks like a cervical collar, goes around the neck only so they can't bend their necks. Protects belly or rear end of dog just fine without all the problems of the e collar. Purchased ones are foam lined plastic with velcro fastening. You can make one with a piece of bendable plastic or a bendable piece of cardboard wrapped inside a towel and taped with duct tape. A heave towel folded and taped will often work also. Some dogs never do worry at the incision-. Look for a picture of the collar on the internet and it will give you a better idea of how they work.

Re: Back again

Thanks for the suggestion. We found 2 big towels and lined them with several sections of the Sunday paper, wrapped the dogs and sealed with duct tape. Works like a charm!
