Vet Visit...Vent-Blitz

Today was Blitz's 1st visit with my regular vet since I brought her home. Of COURSE she was on her best angelic behavior. I think her MO is to make everyone think I've lost my mind. I tell these stories about this wild puppy...I have bite marks on my hands and ankles to prove it, then wherever we go there's this love-fest...ANYWAYS...she was a very good girl. Was poked, prodded, had her temp taken, got a shot, and pronounced very healthy. My VET went on to say what a wonderful temperament she has (she really does)...then asked if I'm going to spay her....then said MAYBE YOU SHOULD BREED HER!! His reasoning??? Her temperament alone. First of all, her "visiting" temperament is FAR from her "at home" temperament where she feels comfortable. She ISN'T so angelic there. I don't know of many people who'd WANT her...or one like her. At least not want her for long!! I was dumbfounded...speechless. All I could say was "uh er no I'm not going to breed her. If I decide NOT to show her I'll spay her at 6 months." Mostly I LOVE my vet. He is SO good with my Rott, my Pit, and now Blitz. He sits on the floor with them, whistles, plays with them. But GEEZ already. Like Becky, Blitz's breeder said when I told HER..."what if he said that to someone who didn't know better?" Yeesh.

Re: Vet Visit...Vent-Blitz

you'd think vets would know better than to encourage breeding, but then, they do seem to love all the momma dogs and puppies. kind of like obstricians. they are all cute when they see them. I have to tell you, Blitz has given me a bad case of puppy fever, maybe the vet fell under her spell.

Debbie, EVERYONE falls under Blitzy's spell!! They just need to take her home for a few days!! She's a BLAST!! And a huge challenge, a stubborn little thing, and a love bug who already follows me around...all rolled into one. JUST what I was looking for...but not for the faint of heart.

You know that was Bella to a tee - she was amazing in every venue except *home*. My husband was seriously worried while I was captivated. I can not wait to hear all the stories as she grows up...sounds like you have a winner!

Re: Vet Visit...Vent-Blitz

It is really strange, but my "breedable" dogs (conformation/passed health checks, etc) are the ones the vets seem to try to pressure me into neutering. But my pet quality, ED bitch, they think she would be great to breed. Fortunately I had her spayed at 9 months. I don't get it. Is it a male/female (dog thing) thing???

Could Be Francis....I have heard similar comments (enthusiastic ) about breeding Bella from an otherwise ultraconservative clinic. My jaw dropped because it was the last think i expected to hear -it actually sort of pissed me off....

Re: Vet Visit...Vent-Blitz

Well.... I use a wonderful vet practice... Very knowledgeable, warm staff... very "country doctor" in attitude.

The vet who has taken over most of my business is actually fearful of rottweilers. After a few visits, I was upgraded from "entering the rear of the building" to "front door" status...LOL. Some folks might take offense to the back door entries, but that's small stuff to sweat, in the big scheme of things.

He really did not want me to spay Pooh. He told me, point blank "This is the kind of temperament that needs to be bred"... Keep in mind, we are a little "country" out here, and I can just imagine some of the rotties he meets on a daily basis. That aside, he respected my decision to do so, and we have a wonderful relationship.

Does this piss me off? Of course not... I take it as a compliment that I've obtained dogs with good temperaments... AND, I've reared them in a manner that people like my vet APPRECIATE. He knows the care I take, the time I spend, and the lengths to which I will go to be a desrving guardian for my dogs...
Does it worry me a little that he might be telling other folks this? Not really... LOL... because I've seen the other dogs that frequent the veterinary clinic... and I'm quite sure he DOESN'T make this a part of his daily chit chat with all of his patients.

I guess what I'm trying to say... don't jump to conclusions that everyone out there is a moron.

My 4 cents...

I do get pretty upset when a vet is trying to bamboozle me into neutering my 18 month old show dog because he is "dysplastic". Had him in there because he went three legged. I got a vet I hadn't seen before (large practice, I like 3 of the 7 vets) due to same day appointment. They took x-rays including hip x-rays. The vet tells me he is dysplastic and I should neuter him right away. She really builds this up and finally I ask to see the x-ray. His hips are fine. Everything she tells me that is wrong with his hips are normal things you see in an x-ray.
When I tell her that he will be OFA'd in six months she invites me back to get the films done there. Yeah, right, let me make the appointment now

Holy Moly! I didn't mean to imply by my post that vets are incapable of being morons... just cautioned people not to rush to judgement...LOL.

3 out of 7 ain't bad..... but I'd be seeking the 3 out from now on...

Well, my young one IS dysplastic... and my vet cautioned me NOT to neuter him at a young age, so he'd develop more muscling in lieu of fat. He's 18 mos old, and still wearing the accessories he was born with...

Cheers,

Re: Vet Visit...Vent-Blitz

Good point Elisabeth re: temperment

I think part of the reason Bella is adored by vet and staff, groomers etc..is that they have some pretty unmangeable Rottweilers....
